COSTA MESA, Calif. ? For the first time this season California Baptist stares at two straight losses after falling in a neck-and-neck finish to Vanguard, Tuesday night, 74-68. The Lancers (12-7, 6-6 GSAC) now fall to sixth place in the Golden State Athletic Conference after Westmont pulled off a big upset over Azusa Pacific.
A Romeka Randolph three tied the game for the 12th time (62-62) with nine minutes left before the Lancers got within two points twice in the final minutes. The last came at 70-68, but CBU never could regain the lead after taking at 59-57 lead midway through the second half on a trey by Erin Greenberg.
CBU had its biggest lead, at 45-40, just a few minutes into the second half after it opened the half with a 13-7 run. The Lancers trailed by as much as eight, 20-12, early in the first half, but got within one at intermission at 33-32.
Despite shooting 50 percent from the field (25-for-50) and from three-point range (10-of-20) and out rebounding Vanguard, 37-34, it was turnovers that ultimately caused CBU's demise. The Lancers turned the ball over 24 times and forced just 11 turnovers from the Lions. Both teams were identical from the line at 8-for-11.
Nicole Davis scored a game-high 26 points as she went 9-for-14 from the floor and 4-of-7 from behind the arc. She also dished out four assists. Randolph was the only other Lancer in double figures with 13 points and was just two rebounds shy of a double-double. She was 5-for-7 from the floor and was a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range.
Sarah Boyd led Vanguard with 21 points.
California Baptist now gets set to host Fresno Pacific, Saturday, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
