CLEVELAND, Tenn. --- Freshman Jamie Achten scored twice and assisted on another as the NAIA's No. 3-ranked Lee (Tenn.) flexed its muscle and stormed past No. 7 California Baptist University, 5-0, Friday night in a battle between top 10 teams on the first day of the Lady Flames' Classic.
The loss is just the Lancers' second of the season as they fall to 5-2, while Lee, which has been to two straight NAIA Final Fours, improves to 5-0 and sets the stage for tomorrow night's showdown with No. 2 Azusa Pacific, 8-0 winners over Savannah Art & Design (Ga.) in the first game.
The Lancers were hoping to make a statement with a good showing against the Flames. However, Lee was the one who made the statement, generating 22 shots, 13 on frame and scoring four times in the first 33 minutes of the game.
It look just 1:20 for Lee to get on the board when Sandra Kaelin scored her fifth goal of the year off a header from a cross by Achten. A stunned CBU never recovered.
In the 13th minute, Acthen scored the first of two consecutive strikes, this one coming on a counter attack when a ball was played over the top of the Lancer defense. Just 11 minutes later, Achten made it 3-0 with a header inside the box off a cross. At that point, CBU head coach Kristen St. Clair opted to pull starting keeper Emily Evanson and inserted Brittany Buchanan into the contest.
Ten minutes after staking its way to a three-goal lead, Lee continued the onslaught when Jenna Achten scored her second goal of the season off another cross into the box to give the Flames a 4-0 lead they carried into the locker room.
Kristine Tuck completed the scoring with her first goal of the year in the 80th minute.
The Lancers had 15 shots and actually out-shot the Flames, 11-8, in the first half. Buchanan made a career-high six saves.
CBU concludes its road trip Saturday against Savannah Art & Design at 2 p.m. (PST).
