Lancers Earn Third Straight Shutout With 1-0 Win Over UNLV

CBU improved to 2-0-1 on the season, while UNLV fell to 1-3-0. The victory marked the Lancers' third consecutive shutout to begin the season, with CBU scoring three goals without conceding through its first three matches. It is just the second time in program history the Lancers have opened a season with three straight shutouts, joining the 2006 squad, and the first time in the NCAA Division I era.
The Lancers wasted little time putting pressure on the UNLV defense, as King and senior forward Alyse Then helped push the attack early. CBU broke through in the eighth minute after a UNLV foul just outside the box gave the Lancers a dangerous free kick. Senior midfielder/forward Anja Jestrovic sent the ensuing service into the box, where King connected on a header at the 7:05 mark to give CBU the 1-0 lead. The goal was King's second of the season, while Jestrovic picked up her first assist.

CBU continued to apply pressure following the opening goal, forcing three saves from UNLV goalkeeper Ava Droze in the first half. Nikki Mau, Taylor Held and freshman Bella D'Amico each put shots on frame as the Lancers searched for a second goal. Head coach Kristen St. Clair also utilized her depth early, going to seven different substitutes during the opening 45 minutes.
UNLV nearly found an equalizer late in the half when Ana De Los Santos struck the left post in the 37th minute, but the Lancers escaped the chance and carried their 1-0 advantage into halftime. CBU outshot the Rebels 5-3 in the opening period and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Rebels came out with increased pressure in the second half as they searched for the equalizer. Graduate goalkeeper Mikayla O'Brien was called into action in the 49th minute, turning away a low shot from Audrina Hernandez to preserve the Lancers' advantage. CBU responded with pressure of its own, earning three corner kicks in a four-minute stretch early in the half.
The intensity continued to rise as the two teams battled through the heat, with the match becoming increasingly physical down the stretch. Three yellow cards were issued over the final 15 minutes, including two to UNLV and one to CBU.
O'Brien came up with one final save in the 89th minute, denying De Los Santos to help seal the victory. She finished with three saves while recording the shutout in her return to the starting lineup. CBU finished with a 10-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal, while also holding a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
"Happy to get the result," head coach Kristen St. Clair said. "This was our first two-game weekend of the season and a great opportunity to test our resilience early in the season. We controlled the game, but the consistency and sharpness of our execution needs to keep getting better on both sides of the ball.
"Tyra scored a brilliant goal off a great cross from Anja to get on the board early. We created some great opportunities and should have had a few more, but credit their keeper for coming up with a few big saves. Mikayla O'Brien showed her leadership quality controlling the 18-yard box and the aerial crosses.
"We have a quick turnaround for Thursday's game, so we'll rest up and get back to work in training to prepare for our next opponent."
CBU will remain at home Thursday when it welcomes Big West opponent UC Santa Barbara to CBU Soccer Stadium for a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
