CBU improved to 1-0-1 on the season with its first victory of 2026, controlling the attack from the start, while Portland State dropped its third straight match to fall to 0-3-0.
"We're happy to get the win and shutout tonight. This was certainly a tale of two halves. First half, we were sharp and controlled the game. Alyse scored a fantastic goal, and Tyra finished the penalty kick well. Second half, we made it harder on ourselves, not being as sharp or composed as we needed to be, allowing our opponents to stay in the game. Becca came up with two big point-blank saves to keep them off the board.
"Overall, we created many dangerous scoring opportunities, including two that hit the post. Easily could have had two or three more goals. We need to be sharper and more composed in the final third. That will come, though. It's early, and we're still refining our attack. We'll enjoy the home-opening win and go back to work tomorrow to prepare for our next game," Head Coach Kristen St. Clair said.
Then wasted little time finding the back of the net, scoring just 2:53 into the match off a cross from junior forward Nikki Mau to give the Lancers an early 1-0 lead.GOAL!! Alyse with the finish! #LanceUp⚔️ pic.twitter.com/ccE7gYDLCY

The pressure continued, with CBU consistently creating chances in the attacking third. King eventually drew a penalty in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick in the 18th minute to double the Lancers' advantage.

CBU carried all the momentum into halftime with a 2-0 lead after outshooting Portland State 12-2 and holding a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The second half was more balanced as CBU Head Coach St. Clair utilized the Lancers' depth. Freshmen Bella D'Amico and Mikayla Benavidez impressed off the bench, playing 48 and 55 minutes, respectively, while Benavidez also put a shot on goal.
King nearly added her second goal of the night in the 61st minute, but her attempt hit the crossbar. Portland State generated more opportunities late, but goalkeeper Rebecca Winton was up to the task in her first start of the season. Winton got the start with usual starter Mikayla O'Brien out due to injury and made three second-half saves to secure the shutout.
The Lancers finished with a 17-7 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal, while holding Portland State without a corner kick.
CBU will remain at home to host UNLV on Sunday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. at CBU Soccer Stadium. Tickets are available at cbulancers.com, and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
