IRVINE, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 14-ranked Concordia scored twice in each half and went on to post a 4-1 win over California Baptist University Saturday in both team's GSAC opener.
The result moves both teams to 4-3-1 overall, and while the Lancers drop to 0-1 in the GSAC, the Eagles improve to 1-0.
It took Concordia all of 14 minutes and two seconds to get on the board when Kyle Hollomon created his own opportunity and beat CBU keeper Jeff Redinger to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. In the 35th minute, Joel Smith converted the first of two Eric Mendoza assists to give the Eagles a 2-0 halftime advantage.
“We had to defend for pretty much the entire first 45 minutes,” said CBU head coach Ryan Jorden. “We created a few chances but just didn't take them. We just didn't compete today.”
Down 2-0, the Lancers began to show life and less than seven minutes into the second half, Gabriel Gonzalez tucked away his fourth goal of the season when he lofted a shot over CUI keeper James Rammelsberg. Christian Correa-Henschke picked up the assist as the Lancers cut the deficit in half.
“We played well coming out of the half and as a result scored, but that was pretty much it,” said Jorden. “The bottom line is we didn't compete today, and you can't play just 15 minutes of good soccer, because it's a 90-minute game. If you do that, good teams will make you pay.”
Just seven minutes later after Gonzalez's goal, the Eagles wrestled back control when Ryan Angell headed in a Mendoza corner kick. Holloman finished the scoring in the 69th minute off an assist from Smith.
The Eagles out-shot the Lancers, 18-9, getting nine shots in each half. Redinger made five saves before giving way to Richard Duran in the final 15 minutes.
