LA MIRADA, Calif. ? Over the last couple of weeks, California Baptist University couldn't catch a break in Golden State Athletic Conference play, but the breaks finally swung the Lancers' way in a 74-65 win over Biola.
It was the first win at Biola for the Lancers (12-7, 4-5 GSAC) since the 2005-06 season and breaks a two-game skid by CBU.
“We just played with a lot more heart overall tonight,” said CBU head coach Danelle Bishop. “The amount of effort we played with was easily the biggest difference in this game than in our previous two. We know we're a better team than what we've shown lately and we just got tired of losing.”
Brenna Hahn scored a game-high 21 points with 10 of those coming off a perfect 10-for-10 night at the charity stripe while the Lancers as a team went 21-for-23 at the line. Heather Couzens added 18 points while Nicole Davis scored 15. Davis also brought down a team-high seven boards.
“We weren't afraid to get aggressive and did a good job at filling roles,” said Bishop. “Both Brenna and Heather stepped up tonight with some clutch shots and that's a pay off of how hard they have been working in practice.”
CBU shot just 38.3 percent form the field and 29.2 percent from downtown, but posted a season-low 14 turnovers while forcing 24 and scored 26 points off of those turnovers.
The Eagles jumped out to a 17-9 lead, their biggest of the game, early in the first half. A Brianna Estell three sparked a 7-0 run to bring CBU within one at 17-16. Biola pushed it back to 21-16, but Davis started a 10-0 run with a trey as CBU climbed out to a 26-21 lead.
The Eagles answered to tie it at 26, but a Couzens two and a pair of Alyson Haley free throws gave CBU a 30-27 lead at the half.
The Lancers opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 39-29, but the Eagles never went way. Biola used a 14-5 run to close it 44-43, the first of three different times that the Eagles got within one. Biola closed to the gap to 58-57 with 3:49 left to play and trailed 60-59 with 2:41 to play, but never retook the lead. CBU scored the next seven points to take a 67-59 lead with under a minute to play and hit free throws in the final minute to take the win.
“Hopefully this win will continue to build confidence because we have to go play a Vanguard team who is looking for a little revenge,” said Bishop.
The Lancers will now go into a hostile environment when they travel to The Pit at Vanguard; Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. CBU won the first meeting in a non-conference overtime showdown in Las Vegas back in December.
