RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Biola scores a late goal in the waning minutes to escape with a stunning win over California Baptist University. If this sounds familiar, it's because it is.
Last year in La Mirada, Biola's Derek Friehe scored with 39 seconds left to lift Biola to a 2-1 victory over the Lancers. On Wednesday, it was the same song, just a different verse.
CBU kept the GSAC's highest-scoring offense in check all day, but Biola finally broke through with an 86th minute goal to escape Riverside with a 1-0 win.
The loss drops the Lancers to 1-3-3 overall, 0-2-0 GSAC, while the Eagles remain unbeaten and improve to 7-0-0, 2-0-0 (6 points).
Biola came in averaging 4.67 goals per game and struggled to generate quality chances against a solid Lancer defense before finally breaking through with the late strike. Likewise, Biola, which also leads the GSAC in goals against average having not surrendered a single goal all season, was put under pressure by the Lancers all day. However, the Eagles were able to find a way to keep the Lancers off the board to record their seventh straight shutout to start the season.
“I thought we were fantastic today,” said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden, “which makes it even more unfortunate that we didn't get the result. We just struggled breaking through on the offensive end again, but I'm really proud of the effort the guys gave today.”
Indeed the Lancers controlled most of the play, keeping the ball in the Eagles' half of the field for the majority of the day. CBU out-shot Biola, 13-6, on the day, but only three of the Lancers' shots were on frame, another one hit the crossbar.
They nearly struck gold in the 62nd minute when Tiburcio Casillas broke free on the right side. His shot went over Biola keeper Aaron Fenlason, but it hit the crossbar and was cleared away. In the 76th minute, Casillas broke free again on the left side, but Fenlason came up with a huge save to keep the game scoreless.
With time winding down, the Lancers were awarded a free kick deep inside Biola's half of the field. Tyler Mitchell played a nice ball into the box, but Fenlason was able to corral it in the midst of an onrushing group of Lancers. The Eagles immediately went on the counter, and when Zach Bautista made his way into the box and slid a ball across, Humberto Toscan tucked away the game's only goal, his fifth of the season with just 3:08 remaining.
Fenlason finished with three saves. CBU keeper Dan Kelly made two.
