RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After the first game of the year, it looked like we might see a different style of play from California Baptist University. The Lancers scored just 60 points in the opener, but having scored 89 points in back-to-back games, including an 89-59 win over Cal Maritime Saturday afternoon, the Lancers showed they haven't strayed too far from CBU head coach Danelle Bishop's run-and-gun offense.
For the second straight night, Kendra Morris scored 19 points for the Lancers (3-0), going 6-for-11 from the field, 3-for-5 from 3-point range, and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Morris has either led or was tied for the lead scorer in all three games this year.
Megan Bradford added 13 points for CBU while Heather Couzens scored 11 and was just a rebound shy of a double-double with nine. Rachel McDaniel scored a career-high with 10 points. Nikki Johnson added seven points and posted a career-high seven steals.
CBU hit 50.9 percent (29-57) from the field and 42.9 percent (6-14) from beyond the arc. The Lancers also forced 23 turnovers for the second straight night, scoring 34 points off of turnovers. CBU's bench also outscored the Keelhaulers' bench, 35-19.
CBU didn't lead by more than four in the first half until a 5-0 run, capped by an Alyson Haley, layup put the Lancers up 17-10. The Keelhaulers cut it to 18-15, before Bradford drained bookend baskets in a 10-0 run to give CBU a 28-15 lead. The Lancers held a 13-point lead five more times before carrying a 42-32 lead at the half.
CBU hit 47.1 percent from the field in the first half with Couzens leading the way with nine points. Bradford had eight and Bryana Williams had six.
CMA cut its deficit to nine, at 42-33, early in the second half, but CBU went on a 22-4 run to lead 64-37 and cruised from there.
The Lancers will now take their first road trip of the year when they travel to Helena, Mont., to take on Carroll (Mont.) and Montana Tech at the Carroll Tournament, Nov. 20-21.
