SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The last time California Baptist University stepped on the court in a competitive nature was nearly three weeks ago. No wonder there might have been a little rust on the armor of the No. 2-ranked Lancers in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-15) win over Mobile (Ala.).
The Lancers (27-5) trailed late in each of the first two sets and early in the third, but made charges to put the Rams (24-12) away in each set in the first match of the 2009 NAIA Volleyball National Championship.
CBU trailed 18-14 in the opening set, before Colleen Sweeney put a kill away to spark an 11-2 run to close out the set. After Sweeney made it 18-15, the Lancers got two errors from the Rams before Noelle Dyk tied the match at 18 with a kill and forced a Mobile timeout. The Rams retook the lead at 19-18 before Sweeney tied the set with a kill. A Kari Oliver ace gave CBU its first lead at 20-19 and Dyk ripped a kill to give the Lancers a 21-19 lead. Mobile answered to make it 21-20, but CBU scored the final four points of the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
CBU trailed 16-12 in the second set, but once again got going late and used a 9-2 run to take the set. Ingrid Carmona started the run with a kill before two straight aces from Bree Rauschenbach made it 16-15 and forced a timeout. Fei Shi made it four straight points with a kill before another Rauschenbach ace and a Carmona kill made it six straight to give CBU an 18-16 lead; one it wouldn't relinquish.
The Lancers didn't wait long in the final set to put the match away. Leading 11-8, CBU used a 6-2 run, taking a 17-10 lead and cruised from there.
It was the 10th straight time that CBU has won its first match of the national tournament. The last time the Lancers lost the first match was in 1992 to Morehead State (Minn.).
Rauschenbach set a career-high with four aces and ripped eight kills to lead the way for CBU.
Shi notched her 17th double-double of the year and fifth straight with a match-high 10 kills and 10 digs. Krista Hasemeyer posted her fifth double-double of the season with a match-high 20 assists and 11 digs. She was just one dig short of tying a career high.
Carmona finished with nine kills and three aces while Melinda Adelin had seven. Oliver notched a match-high 16 digs while Sweeney had three blocks.
The Lancers will now play Taylor (Ind.) tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CST) in the second match of pool play.
