SIOUX CITY, Iowa --- California Baptist has barely broke a sweat in pool play, but now after sweeping Vanguard 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-23) to win Pool B, the Lancers will face stronger opposition.
For the second straight year, since the NAIA changed its format for the national tournament, the Lancers (29-5) have swept their pool and have not dropped a set yet at the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championship.
Eleven different Lancers had kills, including Noelle Dyk who recorded a match-high nine kills. The senior hit .500 (9-1-16) in leading CBU to its second highest hitting percentage of the season at .404 (41-5-89). Jessica Ewoldt ripped six kills while Megan Johnson and Jessica Kalama each had five. Krista Hasemeyer dished out 18 assists while Danielle Sargant had 15. Hasemeyer also served a trio of aces and posted seven digs. Kari Oliver notched a team-high nine digs while Rene Simon had three blocks.
The Lancers never trailed in the first two sets. Colleen Sweeney broke a 5-5 tie with a kill that started a 6-1 run and CBU never looked back. Vanguard got within two at 15-13 midway through the opening set, but the Lancers closed out the set with a 10-3 run to take a 1-0 match lead.
CBU broke open the second after taking a 12-8 lead. The Lancers scored six straight points to lead 18-8 before finishing the 13-5 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Vanguard didn't take its first lead of the match until it used a 4-1 run to take a 16-15 lead. The Lions took their biggest lead of the set at 19-16, but the Lancers answered with a 7-4 run to tie the set at 23. An attacking error gave set point to CBU before Kalama put it away and sealed a spot in bracket play for the Lancers.
CBU now will move into the quarterfinals of the national tournament and will play the winner of Georgetown (Ky.) and Point Loma Nazarene at 8 p.m. (CST).
