RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Three Lancers posted career-highs and another tied a career high as No. 3 California Baptist University bounced back from a loss at Vanguard with a 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-19, 25-15) victory over No. 18 Biola.
Krista Hasemeyer dished out a career-high 59 assists for the Lancers (15-1, 5-1 GSAC), 10 more than her previous high set last season. Kari Oliver also broke her career-high for digs for the sixth time this season with 23 while Noelle Dyk tied her career-high in digs with 17. Ingrid Carmona also chipped in with a career-high 16 kills.
Dyk recorded 16 kills for her sixth double-double of the year while Fei Shi put up her ninth double-double of the season with a match-high 17 kills and 15 digs. Hasemeyer also notched her second double-double with a career-high 12 digs. It was the first time this season that three Lancers posted double-doubles in the same match.
Jessica Kalama also had eight digs, one short of tying a career-high.
“Krista and Kalama really deserve a lot of credit on setting the tone in practice after the loss to Vanguard,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “It was good to see Krista go out there and run the show. Kalama makes a lot of those little plays that people don't always see or don't show up in a stat sheet.”
The Lancers scored the first eight points of the first set before Biola's Meghan Cunningham finally put the Eagles on the board. CBU stretched the lead out to 12-4 forcing BU to burn their final timeout of the set. The Lancers then closed the set on a 13-9 run. The Lancers hit .359 (17-3-39) in the set and Carmona led the way with six kills.
It was Biola who took the early lead in the second set, jumping out 10-5. CBU scored five straight to tie it at 10-10 and neither team led by more than two through the rest of the set. After nine more ties, with the final one coming at 23-23, the Eagles took advantage of two Lancer errors to close out the set and tie the match at 1-1.
CBU trailed 3-1 early in the third set, but Carmona sparked a 6-2 run and the Lancers didn't trail from there. The Lancers took their biggest lead of the set at 19-13 after a 6-3 run that forced an Eagles' timeout. Biola cut the lead to four on three different occasions, but Shi blasted a pair of kills to end the set.
In the fourth set, CBU broke an 8-8 tie and closed the match with a 17-7 run. Dyk had five kills in that final stretch of the match.
“I am still a little frustrated,” said McGuyre. “We dropped our edge after the first set. I think we are capable of high-level stuff. We're not executing on some little things. Biola trains well and is a good team, but we definitely have some things to work on. We just have to find that drive. It took us too long to find the rhythm at Vanguard and dug a hole and tonight we found that rhythm early and then eased up on it. That can cost you a few points or a set like it did tonight.”
The Lancers will turn around in three days and host The Master's in another GSAC contest, Tuesday, at 7 p.m.
