RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Bryana Williams pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in just 14 minutes of play but California Baptist University fell, 65-50, to No. 4 Vanguard Tuesday night in the Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers (10-10, 3-7 GSAC), dropped their sixth straight game and fell to .500 for the first time this season.
Megan Bradford scored a team-high 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the floor and tied a career-high with five treys, going 5-for-10 from beyond the arc. The senior guard was 4-for-9 from downtown in the first half. Heather Couzens added 10 points and seven boards along with a pair of blocks. Alyson Haley also posted two blocks and pulled down eight rebounds.
Neither team was lighting up the nets as they combined to go 38-for-112 (.339) from the floor. The Lancers shot just 37.5 percent (15-40) and hit just nine of its 20 attempts from beyond the arc. The Lions (12-2, 8-2 GSAC) went 23-for-72 from the field and 6-for-33 from 3-point range.
Vanguard held the Lancers, a team who normally does most of their damage in the lane, to just four points in the paint while scoring 18 inside. The Lions also forced 36 turnovers, scoring 31 points in transition. CBU scored just 10 points on 15 turnovers.
Bradford got off to a hot start, hitting her first 3-pointer of the game to put CBU up 3-0 to get the game underway, but Vanguard answered with a 7-2 run to make it 7-5. Over the next seven minutes the lead changed hands seven times as neither team led by more than two until another Bradford trey put the Lancers up 19-16 with 8:39 left in the half. That's when the Lions turned it up a notch, scoring 13 straight points to lead 29-19 and closed out the half with a 16-5 run in all to lead 32-24 at intermission.
Vanguard maintained a single-digit lead until the 11:57 mark in the second half when Bridgette Reyes drained a three to put the Lions up 43-33 and sparked an 8-1 run to make it 48-33 with 10:04 to play. CBU didn't go away as Bradford sank a 3-pointer and then Couzens followed up with a jumper and back-to-back treys to bring the Lancers within four at 48-44 with 7:49 to play, but that was as close as the Lancers came. The Lions were able to close out the game with a 17-6 run to put it on ice.
CBU now hits the road again Saturday for a 5:30 GSAC contest at Fresno Pacific.
