IRVINE, Calif. --- If No. 6 California Baptist University was frustrated after a tough loss to No. 1 Fresno Pacific on Saturday, the Lancers took it all out on No. 16 Concordia Tuesday night.
CBU dropped a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-12) beat down on the Eagles, hitting a scorching .468 while holding Concordia to just an .024 attacking percentage. Both totals were season bests since conference play began nearly a month ago.
“We had a good sustained effort from start to finish tonight,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “That was something we lacked this weekend and we made it a point of emphasis that we needed to keep our level of play up for the entire match.”
Ingrid Carmona had a monster night to lead the Lancers, ripping 17 kills on 28 attempts without a single error. Her .607 attack percentage was the second highest of the season for CBU and the highest by any player with more than 15 kills. Carmona also led the team in digs, recording 13 on the night for her second straight double-double. It was the sophomore opposite hitter's fifth double-double of the season.
“Good digs led to good offense for us,” said McGuyre. “We were able to get Ingrid set up in some good spots and that helped.”
Carmona was not the only Lancer to hit .500 or better, as both Linjun Ji (.500) and Jelena Dragovic (.667) each had blistering offensive nights. Ji recorded nine kills and Jelena Dragovic recorded 6. Jelena Dragovic also assisted on three blocks for CBU which had six total blocks in the match.
Nevena Dragovic, who McGuyre credits with being the reason for the big offensive night, recorded 39 assists in the match. It was her ninth match of the year with more than 35 assists after the freshman missed the first eight matches of the season.
Bree Rauschenbach once again led the Lancers with three service aces to improve her conference leading 0.65 aces per game average. Rauschenbach is 20th in the NAIA in aces per set.
CBU was in control for the entire match, sweeping past the Eagles in less than 60 minutes. The Lancers took leads early and held them late in every set, trailing only twice the entire night. Concordia went up 1-0 and 3-2 in the second set for its only two leads of the match. Each lead lasted just one point. The Lancers had runs of at least five points or more in every set.
The Eagles seemingly knew they were in trouble from the get go, taking a timeout only two points into the first set after emphatic kills by Rauschenbach and Carmona.
Ji served as the closer for the Lancers in the third and final game, ripping four of her nine kills in the final eight points of the match.
It was the Lancers 20th win of the season as the team improved to 20-2 overall and 7-2 GSAC. CBU is the first team in the GSAC to reach 20 wins this season and currently sits third in the conference standings. After starting the season as the No. 2-ranked team in the NAIA, Concordia drops to 13-4, 5-4. The Eagles are currently sixth in the conference.
CBU looks to carry some of its momentum over to Saturday as conference play continues with Hope International coming to town.
