LEWISTON, Idaho --- California Baptist University had its chances late, but couldn't capitalize on an opportunity to defeat No. 11 Lewis and Clark State on its home floor, losing 74-60 to the Warriors.
The Lancers erased an 11 point deficit coming out of the half, but were unable to complete the comeback, losing by 14 points to fall to 5-2. LCSC keeps its record perfect, improving to 6-0 on the season.
“The game was won and lost on the boards and at the free throw line,” said Head Coach John Marcum. “We didn't take care of the ball down the stretch as well and that hurt us. They showed why they are the No. 11 team in the country. Still I thought we showed some heart and some toughness, I was also glad to see us shoot better than 80 percent at the line.”
The Lancers shot just 18 free throws as opposed to the 31 attempted by the Warriors. LCSC also held an edge with 52 rebounds to 36 grabbed by the Lancers. The Warriors had 17 offensive rebounds in the first half alone.
After falling behind by double-digits, CBU cut the deficit to just three with seven minutes to play. A couple of turnovers quickly put the Lancers back behind by 10, however, and CBU would not be able to cut the deficit below five again. The Lancers shot just 28 percent down the stretch in the second half.
Neither team was able to put up big offensive numbers on the game, with both squads shooting 33 percent for the night.
Jasmine Stohr was the star of the game for the Warriors, posting a game-high 30 points and grabbing nine rebounds. She was 9-for-9 from the free throw line.
“They're a good team, and we have to tip our hats to them,” said LCSC head coach Brian Orr about CBU. “Stohr really made some key shots for us.”
The Lancers actually out-shot LCSC from the free throw line, hitting 83 percent of their foul shots, while the Warriors hit 77 percent of their free throws. LCSC's nine more makes on 13 more attempts were a large portion of the difference in the contest.
V.V. Vasciunaite once again led the Lancers in scoring, putting up 26 points on 9-of-20 shooting. Brenna Hahn was the only other player in double-digits for CBU, recording 17 points. Renetha Burton led the team with 10 rebounds.
“We did some things right, but also had some costly errors,” said Marcum. “We just have to learn our lessons and move on. We're looking forward to coming back and finally having a home game next Saturday.”
The 5-2 Lancers have been on the road for all seven of their season-opening games. CBU has its home opener against La Sierra Saturday at 7 p.m.
