SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- No. 2-ranked California Baptist University continued its winning ways Tuesday night getting a road victory against GSAC foe Point Loma Nazarene 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-21).
The only thing that differed from the Lancers' previous 14 victories was the leader on the stat sheet as first year middle blocker Jelena Dragovic had a breakout match against the Sea Lions.
“We had to grind it out tonight and Jelena's contributions were necessary for that,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “I thought our middle was very effective tonight."
Dragovic recorded 14 kills in the match, hitting a blistering .591 and served up three aces. Linjun Ji, also a first year player for CBU, was effective as well on the serve with a match high six aces. Dragovic's attacking percentage led all players with more than one kill on the night. Middle blocker Bree Rauschenbach recorded eight kills at a .583 clip for the match's second highest percentage. Ingrid Carmona had 20 kills for CBU, hitting .318.
CBU dropped the first set to the Sea Lions 25-19, but were able to recover and win the last three. PLNU hit .395 in the first set and .421 in the second, but did not hit above .200 in the final two games as the Lancers closed out the match.
Last week's GSAC player of the week, Tabitha Henken, was the clear offensive leader for the Sea Lions ripping 22 kills at a .476 percentage. It was Henken and Alyssa Pitkin that led the charge in the first set for the Sea Lions as each had five kills to open the match. Pitkin at one point ripped three straight kills to build a 17-9 PLNU lead and force a Lancer timeout.
It was the second set that swung things in favor of the Lancers as the team took what was the most tightly contested game of the match, 25-23. The set was tied 23-23 when Jessica Kalama ripped a kill and Ji finished it off with an ace. Dragovic had four kills in the set, all of which either gave the Lancers the lead or tied the score after the Sea Lions took an advantage.
The victory improves the Lancers' record to 15-0 overall, 3-0 GSAC while the Sea Lions fall to 7-5, 1-2. The Lancers are back in action Wednesday night against Cal Poly Pomona.
