KISSIMMEE, Fla. --- Kylee Nicassio and Nicoline Jorgensen both got in the record books, and California Baptist University erupted for five second-half goals in a 20-minute span in a 6-0 route of Mt. Vernon Nazarene Thursday night in the semifinals of the National Christian College Athletic Association Women's Soccer National Tournament.
The win is the Lancers' fifth straight victory and fourth straight shutout as they improve to 17-2-1 overall, matching the program record for wins in a season.
The Cougars fall to 11-9-2.
Nicassio, Fabiola Zanella da Silva and Amanda Lammers all scored twice. Nicassio and Lammers also had assists. Lindsay Vesling had two helpers.
"I think the girls did a good job establishing a rhythm right away," said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "They were committed to working hard on and off the ball, and they were rewarded for their work. It was a complete team performance."
It was all Lancers from the start as they outshot the Cougars 24-4, but could only connect once in the first 45 minutes on a strike from Nicassio in the 24th minute. That goal was her 48th career score, tying the program record.
Then, in the 48th minute, da Silva opened the floodgates with her second goal of the tournament with a beautiful top-shelf strike to put the Lancers up 2-0.
Just five minutes later, Nicassio hit the books. She took a through ball from Vesling and punched one inside the far post for her 49th career goal, moving her past Courtney Firth and all alone into first place on the Lancers' career scoring chart.
"We're really proud of Kylee," said St. Clair. "She worked
really hard the past four years and especially the past few weeks as the record
approached. She is deserving of this and it was great to see her do it tonight in
the semifinals."
She also registered her 119th career point, moving her into second place on the Lancers' career points list, passing Firth, and just three points away from tying CBU Hall of Famer Yvette Vascones, who had 122 points from 1998-2001.
Da Silva scored her second goal two minutes later, and then
Lammers punctuated the route with goals in the 59th and 68th
minute. The six goals matches the Lancers' season high set in a 6-1 win at
Hawaii-Hilo Oct. 22.
With her two goal night, da Silva now has 102 career points, which makes her the fifth Lancer ever with at least 100 career points. She is sixth with 37 goals.
On a night when Nicassio, a senior, became the best goal scorer in program history, Jorgensen, a fellow senior, also took her place atop the record books as well. Jorgensen made two saves as she and the Lancers' defense posted their 10th shutout of the season, a new single-season record.
"Nicoline is also very deserving to have her name in the record books as well," said St. Clair. "She worked really hard this year and is having a good finish to a good career."
With the win, the Lancers advance to Saturday's championship game where they play Trinity International Saturday at 3 p.m. (EST). The game can be seen live for free at www.gpsnonline.com.
"We will approach the final as we have every other game all season," said St. Clair. "It's just another game. We can only control our performance and execution and that's what we're going to focus on."
