The Lancers fought their way through an offensive funk in the second of three games the team will play in Las Vegas over the Christmas break, getting a narrow 67-66 overtime victory.
CBU struggled all night offensively, shooting just 4-for-17 from beyond the arc and 19-for-34 from the free throw line. The Lancers' defense kept the team in the game, however, and CBU also got some help from the Saints, who made just 11-of-30 foul shots.
Even with the extra five minutes of play, it was the lowest scoring output since CBU's season opening loss and was also the first time since the opener the Lancers had trailed at the half, taking a 27-25 deficit into the break. Still, CBU was able to rattle off its seventh-straight victory to move to 7-1 on the season.
After trailing for the majority of the game, CBU battled back and with less than 30 seconds on the clock the Lancers found themselves down just one. Myriah Hicks drove to the basket and drew a foul, sending the CBU point guard to the line. Hicks hit one of two free throw shots to send the game into overtime.
With the teams trading baskets and the lead in the overtime period, the game was tied and again with less than a minute on the clock it was Hicks turn to make a play. This time it was her defense, as she drew a charge to get possession back for the Lancers with 25 seconds remaining.
Brittney Lewis, who had been CBU's only offensive threat on the night, drove to the hole and missed a heavily contested shot, but Alexis Johnson was there for the rebound, drawing a foul as she tried to put the ball back up.
With Johnson at the line, the Lancers again got one of two free throws, but this time it was enough for the win as a last second shot for the Saints fell short to give CBU the 67-66 win.
Lewis was the only player for the Lancers in double figures, with 20 points and nine rebounds. Nicole Anderson added nine points and grabbed a team-high 11 boards in the game.
CBU shot just 36.7 percent in the game, but held a 14-0 advantage in second chance points. The Lancers' bench also outscored the Saints' 33-22, helped by the 20 points from Lewis, who played 33 minutes off the bench.
The loss drops the Saints to 6-6 on the season.
CBU has just one more game at the Las Vegas Shootout, facing Montana Western tomorrow at 1 p.m.
