SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- The PacWest's leading goal-scorer, Kelly Jenks, added to her tally with a hat trick to lift California Baptist University 3-0 over Dominican Thursday afternoon.
CBU (9-4-0, 8-1-0 PacWest) continued its scoring frenzy as it now has outscored its opponents 25-0 to extend its win streak to six games. The Lancers, who top the conference standings, have not given up a goal since the Fresno Pacific loss to boast over 625 shutout minutes.
"We had a number of dangerous chances today," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "You have to credit Dominican's goalkeeping team for making a few good saves. Our placement needs to be sharper, but the girls did a good job to create those chances."
Dominican, who falls to 6-8-2 and 3-6-1 in PacWest action, only managed to get three shots on the game--all of which came in the second half. On the other side of the ball, the Lancers tallied 22 shots in the game.
"Our play in the attacking third was quite good," said St. Clair. "Everyone got into the attack today."
Jenks--who averages just under a goal a game--opened the game by capitalizing on the first shot of the day in the eighth minute. Lindsay Vesling beat a defender down the right side of the field to send in a cross to the back post. The cross found Jenks at the top of the six-yard box, allowing Jenks to send a floating header over the Penguin goalkeeper's head.
Seven minutes later, the duo combined again to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead. Vesling once again made her way down the right side of the field to send a bouncing cross back through the penalty kick area to an open Jenks at the far post, who knocked it in.
CBU registered nine more shots in the half, but only held onto a two-goal lead at halftime.
Jenks finalized the deal in the 49th minute, however, as CBU was awarded a penalty kick. Vesling had tried to send in a cross after dodging her defender, but the Penguin's arm prevented the cross from being successful to give Jenks the penalty shot. Jenks placed the ball into the corner pocket to give the Lancers a 3-0 cushion.
Dominican gave CBU a scare in the 59th minute as the Penguins' Peyton Jones sent a shot just off target, rocketing off the post. Sara Pimentel knocked the rebound on goal, forcing Rosie Nakata to parry the ball around the post for a corner kick. The Lancers struggled to clear the ball off the corner, giving up another corner kick, but once they got the ball out, the Penguins didn't get another chance at the net.
"The girls did a good job to settle down and keep position after a couple misclears," said St. Clair. "That really was their only dangerous opportunity."
CBU continues on the road on Saturday, taking on Notre Dame de Namur at 11 a.m.
"Being on the road isn't always easy," said St. Clair. "It was a good win for us today, a solid performance. We need to get our rest and just stay consistent on both sides of the ball. We're excited and ready for NDNU on Saturday."
