WAIPIO, Hawaii — In its final regular-season away contest, California Baptist University battled against Hawaii Pacific Saturday night, but came up just shy of completing a come-from-behind attempt. The Lancers fell 2-1 to the Sharks, dropping to,3-7-1 overall, 2-3 in PacWest action, while HPU improves to,7-4-1, 5-1.
Despite outshooting the Sharks 13-to-8, the Lancers found themselves in familiar territory after giving up the first goal of the game. After both teams went into halftime with no goals under their belts, HPU found the back of the net in the next period, scoring in the 57th minute.
Ike Akubulio had a beautiful response to the Sharks, however, evening the game at 1-1 just minutes later. After the Lancers drew a foul, Akubulio rocketed the free kick directly into the upper right corner of the goal, giving the HPU goalkeeper absolutely no chance.
Back on an even slate, CBU pressed once again, but was caught offside before it could get another shot on goal.,
In the 70th minute, the Sharks took advantage of an offensive opportunity, finishing a shot inside the six-yard box to take back their lead.
Hoping for another quick response, seconds later Andrew Reveles aimed at the target, but sent his shot just over the top to keep the score at 2-1. The Lancers kept pushing, getting a header shot just wide from Josh Mobley and earning a corner kick in the 81st minute. Akubulio looked to find the equalizer once more, but the Sharks cleared it off the line and rode out the remaining time to hold on to the 2-1 victory.
CBU returns home to conclude the rest of the regular season at home, first taking on Academy of Art on Thursday, Oct. 16, with a 12:30 p.m. kickoff.
