RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After a scoreless first half Saturday afternoon, California Baptist University came alive in the second half to score four goals for a 4-0 blasting of Dominican University of California.
The Lancers improve to 5-7-1 on the season and 4-3-0 in the PacWest, while the Penguins fall to 0-12-1 on the year, 0-7 in conference.,
"Today was great for us to keep a clean sheet and score so many goals," said head coach Gregg Schroeder. "Dominican has kept nearly everyone to one or two goals. Not everybody has been able to break them down. They're a young team, but a good one.,For us to put away four—the most they've conceded this year—was a good result for us in that regard. It should give us confidence moving forward."
,
Despite CBU putting the pressure on early and firing off three shots in the first five minutes of action, Dominican held the Lancers off to enter halftime even at 0-0.,
"Scoring is an art, it's not an easy thing," said Schroeder. "You're constantly having to create new ways to score. In past games, our guys have been frustrated because they've been doing a lot to create chances, but have not had the finishing touch. That's what we talked about at halftime, to just keep doing what they're doing and they'll figure out a way to get it in the back of net so they can play more freely."
Just like they started the first half, the Lancers opened the second with shots in the beginning moments and found the finishing touch they were looking for. As the Penguins couldn't get a good clear off a CBU corner kick in the 49th minute, Bryan Portillo sent another high cross into the box. James Bogdanovich rose up above the Penguin defense, heading the cross home into the back of the net to put his squad up 1-0.,
"What most people might not know, that was a cross from my left back to my right back," said Schroeder. "It's not often you get both outside backs into the attack. It was a great ball by Bryan. It's not a surprise James got up and over the defense, he's extremely athletic. I'm super happy for both of them to get what essentially was the game-winner."
The Lancers continued to press the Penguin defense and found another goal in the 80th minute. Bogdanovich sent a long ball over the top of the visitors' defense, where Aidan Apodaca ran onto it with just the goalkeeper to beat. The freshman attacker kept his composure and finished his breakaway with ease to give CBU a 2-0 cushion.,
"We've been working on different runs with our strikers and having our backs recognize when to play the ball," said Schroeder. "Often times when you drive a ball, it goes too far out of bounds or to the goalkeeper. James did a good job dropping it right onto the other side of Dominican's back line."
Almost exactly five minutes later, Apodaca struck again. Josh Robinson drove a rolling ball across the face of the goal and Dominic Escalera dummied it through for Apodaca. Once again with composure, Apodaca beat a defender and scored his sixth goal of the season, second of the day.
"Aidan can score," said Schroeder. "He's young and young players go through scoring slumps, but you have to keep your head up. It's been frustrating for him to not put away some chances in earlier games, so for Aidan to score two today, it was good for him and for us."
CBU got some fresh legs off the bench in the last five minutes, which provided the fourth and final goal. Josue Soto sent a dangerous cross into the mix, where Jacob Zalesky sent it on frame, but it rattled off the crossbar. Josh Mobley followed the shot and finished the rebound to score his first collegiate goal and give CBU the 4-0 victory.
"Mobley does well to put himself in good spots offensively," said Schroeder. "He did a good job at practice this past week and was scoring a lot. He worked hard at training to earn a starting spot and I'm happy he got his goal. Now we need to keep building with him. He knows what it looks like and feels like, so now he just needs to keep doing it."
The Lancers finished the day with 30 shots, while holding the Penguins to just three shots. CBU will look to carry that offensive prowess on Tuesday as they host Fresno Pacific at 12:30 p.m. CBU then hosts rival Azusa Pacific on Saturday, kicking off at noon.
"Today, was a good win in terms of momentum," said Schroeder. "We have two tough teams we'll play next week. The fact that we were able to score and keep them out of our net, it's a good way to be going into next week."
