Frozen In Tie

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Coming off staggering wins, California Baptist University found itself in unfamiliar territory Saturday afternoon as it had to rally from behind. The Lancers found an equalizer but couldn't find the game-winner, ending double overtime deadlocked at 1-1 with Dominican University of California.,
With the result, CBU moves to 7-4-2 on the season and 5-0-2 in the PacWest, while the Penguins now sit 2-10-1 overall, 2-4-1 in conference.
"Soccer's a humbling game sometimes," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "You can dominate and not get the three points. We did a good job to fight back and take control of the game, just unlucky to not get the go-ahead goal."
Dominican took advantage of what St. Clair called "an uncharacteristic slow start" of the Lancers and netted a goal in the 17th minute. Mckenna Kimball sent a shot from distance that took a slight deflection off a CBU player to tuck into the upper far post pocket.
"It was an unlucky goal off a deflection," said St. Clair. "We did what we do well and got back to work, though. We just need to continue to be sharper on both sides of the ball."
CBU found a response in the 32nd minute as Justene Kesterson scored her fourth goal of the season. Samantha Myers initiated the play by passing up the field to Tambrie Awai. With her back to the goal, Awai turned and showed fancy footwork to get past her defender and send a cross into the box. Kesterson took the cross off a bounce and redirected it into the back of the net on her first touch.,
"Tambrie, Lindsay Vesling and our outside attackers created dangerous opportunities for us," said St. Clair. "We had a ton of chances. We got sharper as the game went on. We're making good progress."
Tied 1-1 at halftime, the Lancers were hungry for a go-ahead goal and continued to press the Penguin defense, but couldn't break through to force the game into extra time. Sara Escobedo made three crucial saves in the second half to keep the visitors from grabbing another goal.
"Sara did a good job to make saves when we needed her to make them," said St. Clair.
In the first overtime period, CBU looked like it found the golden touch in the 94th minute off a corner kick from Silvia Sanchez. Once again, Kesterson redirected the cross on frame, but an outstretched Sylvanna Islas just got a hand on it to keep it out of the net.
"Credit to Dominican for playing well," said St. Clair. "Their goalkeeper had a heck of a save. She definitely came up big for them."
The Lancers will look to shake off the 1-1 tie as they host Fresno Pacific on Tuesday, kicking off at 3:00 p.m.
