RIVERSIDE, Calif. — As the regular season continues to wind down, California Baptist University continues to pick up speed. The Lancers powered through to a 6-0 blasting over Holy Names Thursday afternoon, with each of the goals coming from a different player.
"Today was a pretty dominant performance across the board for us," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "I'm proud of the hard work the girls put in today. We're peaking at the right time. We have a deep attacking core, anyone can score on any given day and that was evident today. We scored from a variety of players in a variety of ways."
CBU improves to 10-4-2 on the season and remains unbeaten in the PacWest at 8-0-2. HNU will have to look elsewhere for its first win of the season, falling to 0-12-1 overall, 0-8-1 in conference.
Justene Kesterson started the scoring rampage in the third minute of action. After the Hawk goalkeeper blocked her first attempt on goal, Kesterson finished her own rebound to put the Lancers on the board.
Three minutes later, Lindsay Vesling sent a dangerous ball into the box, which one of the Hawk defenders attempted to clear. Unfortunately for HNU, the clearance didn't go in the direction it was looking for and instead found itself in the back of the net to give CBU a 2-0 cushion.
With still a lot of soccer to be played, Chaylin Couzens and Tambrie Awai got into the action next. Awai put her head on a Hawk goal kick, sending it back toward HNU's goal. Couzens ran onto it and calmly scored her fourth goal of the season.
Right before halftime, another player caught the scoring bug to give CBU a 4-0 lead at the break. After Ashley Richardson made a diving clear to get the ball out of the Lancers' defensive third, Kailey Nishimura ran onto it and found herself one-on-one with the Hawk goalkeeper. Nishimura took a touch passed the goalkeeper and easily slotted the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.
Despite holding a 4-0 advantage, CBU kept the domination on and found two more goals in the second half. Lauren Wallberg finished a byline pass from Vesling in the 50th minute and Kimberly Allard capped the scoring in the 56th minute by dribbling through the Hawk defense to take a crack at the top of the 18-yard box.
The Lancer defense held firm to its shutout, not allowing HNU to take a single shot in the game.
"We're continuing to work on consistency," said St. Clair. "Our back line is working really hard. Credit to them for not allowing a single shot. Doesn't matter who you're playing, it's always a nice thing."
CBU will look to keep the momentum moving forward as it closes out the regular season with two final home games. The Lancers first host Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. before taking on fellow undefeated-in-conference opponent Point Loma next Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1:30 p.m. CBU currently ranks No. 8 in the NCAA Division II West Region, while the Sea Lions sit one spot ahead at No. 7. The top six teams in the final rankings earn a spot in the championship tournament, which begins Nov. 13.
"We want to build off each day, each game," said St. Clair. "It's important for us to go into each game prepared to play and prove that. We'll take our hard work and the progress we made today and apply it for Saturday. NDNU is a good team so it'll be a good game. We'll enjoy this tonight and start preparing for them tomorrow."
