First Day Results
EAST LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- When the competition level goes up, one must also elevate their game, and that is exactly what California Baptist University did the first night of the A3 Performance Invitational Thursday.
CBU assembled several highlight performances, including two standout relay swims, at the elite event, which includes NCAA Division I squads like UCLA, USC, UC Santa Barbara, San Diego State and Hawaii and D-II power UC San Diego. The Lancers opened and ended the day with top-seven performances, as they took fifth in the 400-yard medley relay and seventh in the 200-free relay.
"It was a great meet, swimming against some of the best teams in the country," Coach Rick Rowland said. "We had a few swimmers who rested, but we had others who were just swimming through it. This meet is a good opportunity to go up against some of the best swimmers around."
Overall, CBU sits in fifth place and in front of USC and Hawaii through day one of the meet with 144 points.
In the final event of Thursday's finals, 22nd-ranked CBU sent out Josh Hanson, Nikolay Klepikov, Derek Wedel and Drew Denton for the 400-medley and the foursome hit the wall in three minutes 22.93 seconds -- beating out Hawaii and Cal State Bakersfield -- as the time was less than a second off a B-standard for the Division II Championships.
Denton also had a hand in getting the Lancers to the finals of the 200-free relay, as he teamed with Ashton Lowery, Josh Frazer and Chaffin Blake. The quarter took seventh in 1:25.90.
While the CBU relays were strong, its most impressive performance was of the individual variety and provided by Hanson. The junior put together a bronze performance in the 200 individual medley by taking third in 1:49.40 -- a Division II B cut. He won the prelim race in 1:48.43.
"Hanson had the fastest 200 IM today, unfortunately he had it in prelims," Rowland said, "but he still did great taking third against a bunch of D-Is."
The three-day event continues tomorrow at the East Los Angeles College Swim Stadium, hosted by UC San Diego.
