LA JOLLA, Calif. --- Going up against a tough West Region opponent in UC San Diego Thursday night, California Baptist University gave up two first-half goals and couldn't quite claw out of the hole, dropping a 3-0 loss.
With the result, the Lancers drop to 1-3-1 while the Tritons improve to 5-1.
CBU registered the first shot of the game and got a dangerous opportunity 11 minutes before halftime. Andrew Reveles created a scramble in the 18-yard box. UCSD's defense couldn't quite seem to clear the ball, half expecting the goalkeeper to come claim the ball, allowing Jeromy Gurule to take advantage of a loose ball. Gurule hit a one-time shot just wide of the goal.
Less than two minutes later, the Tritons struck first. Malek Bashti finished a shot from close range to put the home team up 1-0. UCSD cut a little deeper in the 44th minute to take a 2-0 lead at halftime, exploiting a breakaway opportunity.
Trying to shake off their frustrations, the Lancers fired back in the first minute of the second half as Josh Mobley got a shot on frame. The UCSD keeper managed to get a hand on the low-driven shot to parry it wide and keep CBU off the board.
In the 50th minute, the Tritons found the back of the net again to take a 3-0 lead.
Desperate to fight out of the hole, Thomas Carter and Dominic Escalera each gave CBU chances off headers that were slightly off target.
With six minutes left in the match, the youth of the Lancers connected to create another scoring chance. Dario Garcia started the play from the back, finding Taylor Moe, Mobley and Daniel Westholm to earn a free kick. The Triton defense held firm, however, walking away with the 3-0 victory.
CBU will look to bounce back at home in one last nonconference game on Saturday. The Lancers host Cal Poly Pomona at 3:30 p.m. before hitting the road to begin PacWest action.
