Final Tuneup
9/20/2014 6:41:00 PM | Men's Soccer
RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Coming off a tough loss on the road, California Baptist University came out Saturday afternoon on its home turf ready to set the tone. The Lancers couldn't get past Cal Poly Pomona's defense, however, dropping a 2-0 defeat.
CBU falls to 1-4-1 after its final nonconference tuneup, while CPP moves to 4-0-1.
Just 11 minutes into the contest, it appeared to be the Aidan Apodaca show as the freshman created dangerous scoring chances for the Lancers. In the fourth minute of action, the freshman broke through the Bronco defense to get a one-on-one chance against the goalkeeper, who came up with his first save of the game.
Less than a minute later, Apodaca threatened again. After Chris Gaitan sent in the corner kick, Apodaca got a flick on frame but it was cleared out of danger.
Apodaca created another opportunity in the 11th minute, firing off his third unanswered shot just off target to keep the score at 0-0.
CPP turned on the pressure in the second half and found the first goal of the game in the 48th minute to hold the 1-0 upperhand.
As time wound down, the Lancers kept pushing in their offensive third, hungry for an equalizer, but couldn't quite seem to get past the Bronco defense.
Paul Oliver gave CBU a dangerous look on frame in the 82nd minute, sending a rocket of a shot first time on the volley off a misclearance, but the Bronco goalkeeper stepped in front once again.
The Broncos struck again in the 88th minute to seal the victory, taking advantage of a two-on-one opportunity off a counter attack to grab the 2-0 result.
CBU heads back out on the road next weekend, heading to Dixie State for a Saturday contest to open PacWest action. The Lancers then travel to Hawaii for a four-game swing before returning to Lancer Field on Thursday, Oct. 16, to host Academy of Art at 12:30 p.m.
