ST. GEORGE, Utah — After being held scoreless in its last two matches, California Baptist University broke through the barrier Saturday morning on the road.
The Lancers scored not once, but twice and held on to grab a 2-1 victory over Dixie State to begin PacWest play on a high note. CBU improves to 2-4-1, 1-0 in conference, while the Red Storm continue to look for their first win of the season, standing 0-4-1 overall, 0-1 in the PacWest.
"I thought it was a good game for us," said head coach Gregg Schroeder. "We played really well. We were very organized and committed together."
Looking to score early on, CBU put four shots up in the first 15 minutes of action and kept the pressure on.
Andrew Reveles broke the scoreless barrier in the 36th minute, heading in a cross from Josh Robinson back across the goal into the net to put CBU on the board 1-0. After collecting a switch pass, Robinson took on a defender and cut it back to whip in a cross off his left.
"Josh is a good dribbler so we encourage him to take on defenders when the timing is right," said Schroeder. "Andrew isn't a big forward, but he got up and headed it back across the goal, not giving their goalkeeper a chance."
Just minutes before the ref blew the whistle for halftime, Wyatt Deane almost tacked on another. Robinson sent in the Lancers' sixth corner kick of the game so far and Deane redirected the cross on frame, but connected with the post instead of net to keep the score at 1-0 at the break.
"We had some very good chances to put the game away that unfortunately didn't go in," said Schroeder. "We kept playing though and got it in the second half."
Aidan Apodaca gave CBU the boost it needed just two and a half minutes into the second half, finding the DSU goalkeeper in a vulnerable situation. Jeromy Gurule sent a pass through the middle of the field, connecting with Apodaca who had broke in behind the Red Storm back line. Apodaca then lifted his shot up and over the DSU keeper, who got a piece of it, but not enough as it tucking it trickled into the net to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead.
"It was a good one-versus-one opportunity that Aidan finished," said Schroeder.
The Lancers remained dangerous as Josh Mobley had a chance at a breakaway in the 60th minute. Dixie State's goalkeeper prevented the breakaway by taking Mobley down outside the box, earning himself a red card to force his team to play the last 30 minutes a man down.
Despite the advantage, CBU couldn't find another goal in the next play and surrendered a counter attack to allow the Red Storm to cut the score to a one-goal lead.
"When a red card comes out, it can be tricky since usually the team that goes down has a new sense of urgency," said Schroeder.
As time wound down, the Red Storm kicked into overdrive, desperate to find an equalizer. The Lancer defense held its ground, giving CBU the 2-1 victory.
"The guys withstood the test Dixie State put up at the end so it's a good result for us," said Schroeder.
CBU heads back home to rest and refuel itself before heading across the Pacific to take on four Hawaii schools in a span of eight days. First up for the Lancers, the Chaminade Silverswords on Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m. PST.
"It's nice to have our first PacWest win under our belts as we head out on this big trip," said Schroeder. "The Hawaii teams are tough so we should have four really good games. It'll be a matter of building on the works we achieved together as a team today."
