SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – After relying on offense the day before, California Baptist University leaned on its defense Friday night. It yielded the same result for the Lancers, who won their fourth-straight PacWest match with a sweep at Dominican.
CBU had three players produce double-digit kills for a .420 attack percentage in a 3-0 win over Notre Dame de Namur Thursday, but three Lancers had 10 or more digs Friday in a 25-16, 27-25, 25-17 victory over Dominican. CBU's record now sits at 8-4, 4-0 in the PacWest, while the Penguins fall to 2-10, 0-4, with the Lancers ending their Northern California road trip at Academy of Art on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Tori Hinderaker led CBU with 13 digs, while Jenna Perry and Michelle Waber both had 11 digs. The Lancers also had eight blocks, with Lauren Hackett finishing with a team-high five block assists and Kiera Brunson and Jessica Harris both logging four others.
While the Lancers' defense took front stage, their offense stayed hot, as well. Overall, they hit at a .361 percentage, led by Hackett finishing with a team-high 14 kills. Waber logged another double-double with 11 kills, while Harris and Perry ended the night with nine and eight kills, respectively.
In the first set, CBU sprinted out to a 7-2 lead. Dominican trimmed its deficit to three, 11-8, before a 8-0 run put the Lancers ahead 21-10. The visitors powered through as Perry ended the set with a kill.
Dominican held the lead throughout most of the second set and were up by as much as five at 14-9 and 21-16. Waber helped spark a 7-1 run, with two kills, that gave the Lancers a 23-22 lead. The Penguins battled back to grab set point, 24-23, but a kill from Harris knotted the score. A Perry kill tied things again at 25-25 before consecutive Dominican attacking errors handed CBU a 2-0 lead.
The Lancers jumped out to another 7-2 lead in the third set, but the Penguins managed to tie things up at 8-8. Neither team could establish a lead, with ties being forced at 9, 10, 11 and 12, before a 8-1 spurt – sparked by two kills from Waber and Hackett each – gave CBU a 20-13 advantage.
The cushion allowed the Lancers to trade points with Dominican before a kill from Siko and ace from Waber gave them the set, 25-17, and the match.
