HONOLULU, Hawaii — Despite putting on the offensive pressure on thick, California Baptist University found itself trailing by one Saturday afternoon to Chaminade. The Lancers dug deep, however, grabbing a 2-1 come-from-behind overtime victory to start their Hawaiian trip on a positive note.
CBU—who outshot the home squad 27-to-8—improves to 3-4-1 overall and 2-0-0 in PacWest action, while the Silverswords fall to 3-5-0 and an even 2-2-0 in conference.
The Lancers came out hungry for a goal, keeping the ball on the Silverswords' defensive half for most of the first frame. Andrew Reveles looked to put CBU on the board first in the 25th minute, but connected with the post instead of the back of the net.
Coming out of halftime still in a scoreless draw, Chris Gaitan tested Chaminade's goalkeeper seven minutes in, forcing the keeper to tip the ball into the crossbar.
It was Chaminade who broke the scoreless streak, however, scoring in the 61st minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Reveles gave CBU another dangerous look, getting a shot on frame but once again the Silversword goalkeeper got a glove on it to keep his net unscathed.
That didn't last, though, as the Lancers finally broke free with less than five minutes remaining in the game. After Chaminade attempted a clear, Gaitan collected the ball, turned and dribbled toward the corner. The junior sent in a bending shot, stunning the goalkeeper as it hit the inside of the far post and into the goal, evening the game at 1-1.
With new life, the Lancers found themselves in familiar territory, entering overtime for the fourth time this season. Determined to find the golden goal, Reveles ended the game in the 95th minute to lift CBU 2-1. Paul Oliver sent Reveles a long throw in, where the junior attacker knocked it in off a defender's reflection.
CBU gets a day to rest before hitting the pitch once more, traveling to BYU-Hawaii on Monday for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff.
