SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Confidence was not lacking Friday for California Baptist University, as it walked into San Francisco State's gym carrying a five-dual winning streak into a day filled with two match-ups with Simon Fraser and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe SF State.
The Lancers had something to live up to after being bumped to a No. 18 ranking in NCAA Division II earlier in the week. They delivered with a 48-0 shutout of the Clan and 25-12 victory over the Gators.
Matt Hickman, Christian Smith, Jacob Waste and David Dill each won two matches for CBU on the day, as the Lancers improved to 13-4, 6-2 in the RMAC. Several other wrestlers were undefeated on the day, but with one win coming via forfeit as neither Simon Fraser nor SFSU fielded full lineups.
At 149-pounds, Hickman started the day with a 7-3 decision over the Clan's Kenji Yamashita. Nolan Kistler (157) kept things moving with a 17-0 technical fall of Victor Kwan, which led to the Lancers taking a 14-0 lead after a forfeit at 165.
Christian Smith (174) followed up on his RMAC Wrestler of the Week award with an 8-1 decision defeating Morgan Smith. Waste (184) majored Josh Kim, 11-2, at 184 to give CBU a stranglehold on the dual with a 21-0 lead. Paul Head (197) clinched the victory with a pin of Ben Smyth 2:38 into the match, giving the Lancers an insurmountable 27-0 lead.
A 5-3 decision from Dill on Sean Molle effectively ended the dual, with Simon Fraser forfeiting the final three weight classes.
CBU knew things would be closer in its finale with SF State, as the Gators were only forfeiting one weight class. Hickman got the start again and delivered with a 4-1 decision over Dylan Furtado, and a forfeit of 157 gave the Lancers a quick 9-0 lead.
SF State pulled within 9-3 with a decision win at 165. Christian Smith kept rolling with a 12-3 major of Calvin Nicholls, which Waste followed up with a 4-1 decision against Johnny Costa.
The Gators kept some hope alive with another decision victory at 197, but consecutive wins from Dill and Christian Betancourt sealed CBU's second win of the day. Dill eked out a 4-3 decision of Sam Alnassiri and Betancourt posted an impressive 9-2 decision against Brandon Vu in his only action of the day, as CBU took 22-14 lead.
While the team result was no longer in question, there was still drama in store for Peter Cunningham, who debuted at No. 8 in the 141-pound NWCA rankings this week, along with Waste at 184 pounds. The freshman received a bit of a challenge from Daniel Flores but got by with an 8-3 decision.
CBU returns to SFSU's California Collegiate Open on Saturday morning after producing three individual champions at the event in 2014. None of those three Lancers are back for this year, however, as a new group of grapplers look to win their bracket at the open.
