RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Those eager for an early peek at a new-look California Baptist University team or a glance of former Lancer greats got just what they wanted Saturday in the squad's annual Alumni Day games.
More than 50 alumni made it out for the festivities, but that was not enough for what appears to be a promising Lancer club in place for the 2015 season, as the current team beat out its predecessors, 4-1. Still, CBU had to get past three of seven Lancer Alumni pitchers who are currently pitching professionally (Trevor Oaks, Caleb Dirks and Jon Bengard). Those three made it a record for how many professional pitchers lended their arms for Alumni Day in the history of the event.
Antonio Chavarria had a team-high two hits Saturday, while Zack Norris arguably had the biggest hit of the day when he laced a triple to give the Lancers a lead in the sixth inning. Andy Crowley came in and shut the door, giving Lancer fans a glimpse of what they might see in 2015. The senior not only played his regular position of center field, but came into the closer's role and got the save in the final inning.
It was Stephen Carabajal who picked up the win after going four innings and allowing just one run on a RBI double from Zach Esquerra, who will serve as one of the assistant coaches for the Lancers in 2015. In addition to Crowley, Patrick Gonzales and Chavarria each pitched an inning of scoreless relief to help seal the victory.
Now, CBU can fully focus on the games that really count as it opens the new season Thursday at Cal State L.A. at 6 p.m. before hosting its home opener at 6 p.m. Friday at Totman Stadium.
