LAIE, Hawaii — California Baptist University opened strong Saturday night against BYU-Hawaii and kept rolling to an 87-53 victory.
The Lancers improve to 17-3 on the season and 10-2 in the PacWest with their second-straight Hawaiian win. The Seasiders fall to 12-7 overall, 9-4 in conference.
Darsha Burnside (7-for-13) continued her strong performance at the post, scoring 17 points and snagging 11 rebounds. She also picked up six blocks and stole the ball away twice. Kamille Diaz followed with 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting, with Olivia Weber (5-for-7) and Courtney Nelson each adding 12 points to the Lancers' tally.
As a team, CBU handled the ball well, finishing the night with 28 assists. Cassidy Mihalko and Diaz accounted for nine of those assists without turning the ball over once and Erin Asher added six more.
"It felt good out there today with my team," said Diaz. "We shot the ball well and my teammates found me to get my shot off. I love playing with them."
The Lancers opened strong against the Seasiders, shooting over 55-percent from the field in the first five minutes. A deep jump shot from Erin Asher gave her team a 10-point cushion at 24-14, forcing a BYUH timeout.
CBU's lead didn't last long, however, as BYUH answered back with a 13-2 run to take the lead, 27-26. Burnside cut the spree by grabbing an offensive board, rattling it in off the backboard and drawing a foul in the process. She finished the free throw to complete the three-point play and put the Lancers back in front 29-27.
Once the Lancers got their groove back, they kept on a roll to walk into halftime with a 42-29 cushion. Olivia Weber sparked the 13-2 run with a three-point shot. Nelson capped the spree just before the break by driving to the basket.
CBU kept its hot hand in the second half and outcompeted the Seasiders, scoring 45 points to the home team's 24. The Lancers were back to their stellar three-point defending ways, holding BYUH to a 28.6-percent from the perimeter, while boosting their own percentage up to 70-percent.
Chanel Cambronero gave the Lancers their first 30-point lead of the night, dropping a three-pointer with just under seven minutes to play. BYUH tried to hang on, but saw CBU coast to the 87-53 victory.
The Lancers conclude their Hawaiian trip on Monday, taking on the PacWest leader Hawaii Pacific at 6:30 p.m. PST.
