RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- For the second time in eight days, California Baptist University was looking to upset a higher-ranked Whittier College team. One major difference between the two contests was the fact the Lancers were playing from behind against the No. 19 Poets on Saturday. They then turned around and grabbed a 19-13 victory over Division III's No. 9-ranked La Verne to move to 12-8 on the year.
CBU trailed by three heading into halftime, but used a monster third quarter to overcome Whittier 15-14 to start the Lancer Invite's second day. In the crucial third quarter, CBU outscored the Poets 6-1, killed three power plays — thanks to six Joseph Moorman saves — and received a hat trick from Brent Teraoka all over an eight-minute span. It helped transform what was once a 10-6 deficit for the Lancers into a 14-11 lead.
"I would like to say it was something I said, but it's just something they just took upon themselves," Coach Kevin Rosa said. "They were tired from playing behind and Brent stepped up, made some big shots and gave us momentum. That's on them, they dug down, found some energy and played a great third quarter."
Whittier managed to make the score look closer than it actually was in the end, scoring twice in the final 37 seconds of the contest.
Teraoka and Tucker Angelo each notched a hat trick in the game, with Teraoka's four goals leading the way. Moorman finished with 12 blocks in all after the huge third-quarter performance.
Both teams came out firing and trading goals, with the first quarter ending in a deadlocked 5-5 tie. Five Lancers scored in the first eight minutes, while Wedge Molthen did the heavy lifting for the Poets down low, with the two-meter scoring four of his game-high six goals in the opener. Whittier would take the first multi-goal lead of the game with a 4-0 run in the second quarter giving it a 10-6 lead with 2:25 remaining in the first half.
CBU began its comeback 18 seconds later when Clint Walling rattled one home. The Lancers kicked into another gear in the second half, with its defense and crisp passing setting multiple goals in the frame. Teraoka and David Ring each scored two minutes into the half, followed by Angelo and Teraoka goals within 1:13 of each other to give CBU its first lead since the first goal of the game, 11-10, with 3:44 left in the third.
"[Defense is] where it changed, obviously we scored six goals, but we scored a lot in the first half, too," Rosa said. "When we play our best is when we're locking down on defense because it leads into us getting good looks on counter attacks."
Whittier ended the run, but it was short lived. Teraoka and Nick Candau scored once more each to end the quarter, with Candau's coming with three seconds left, to give the Lancers a 13-11 lead going into the fourth. Ring scored first in the quarter for CBU and Teddy Forte helped put the game away by answering a Poet goal with one of his own to maintain the three-goal edge, 15-12, with 4:49 to play.
CBU started the nightcap with four unanswered goals before La Verne ended the run, but Candau answered right back to make it 5-1. Ring snuck in a goal before the second period ended, making it 12-5 in favor of the Lancers.
The Leopards kept pushing, but CBU had a response for every goal La Verne threw at the Lancers.
Teraoka gave CBU a 17-11 cushion, putting the Lancers in the driver's seat with back-to-back goals as CBU coasted to a 19-13 victory.
