Hakes Rises to the Occasion

SEASIDE, Calif. — One year ago today, California Baptist University men's golf team finished its final round at the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Invitational. Major changes have taken place since last year's tournament as the Lancers jumped up 11 spots, from 17th to now placing sixth as a team.
CBU's sixth place finish with a score of 889 after three rounds involved beating five top 50 NCAA Division II teams including No. 22 Western Washington and No. 23 UC Colorado Springs. The Lancers shot an overall 304. Chico State won the Otter Invitational with a team score of 859, shooting a 288 for the third round.
"We obviously hoped for a better finish, but it was still a solid showing in a great field." head coach John Hackney said.
Individually, Glenn Hakes rose to the occasion shooting a two under par 70 for the final round, earning a top 10 finish. His patience and sharp shooting showed his ability to compete amongst the top golfers. Hakes beat his previous low score of 75 in the final round of the Otter Invitational.
"It was great to see Glenn back in top form," Hackney said.Â
Chris Carew and Kavan Eubanks both finished with 217 in the three-round tournament. Greg Gonzalez (222), Tai Kuida (241) and Christian Sanders (237) also contributed to the success as a team. J.J. Qualkenbush ended his firt collegiate tournament of the season with a 247 (80).
The Lancers head to their last fall tournament on the 26th of October where the will compete in the McDonough Cup in Orlando, Fla.
