FRESNO, Calif. — Despite dominating for most of the game — and having to deal with some adverse conditions — California Baptist University could only walk away with a 1-1 tie Saturday evening at Fresno Pacific.
The Lancers move to 5-7-2 on the year, 5-3-1 in the PacWest. The Sunbirds 7-5-2 overall, 5-3-2 in conference.
"We were pretty much dominant from beginning to end," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We were unlucky on the finishing end. I'm incredibly proud of the players, this was the best work rate we've shown all year. The character and class the girls carried themselves in was high-level."
CBU came out firing on all cylinders, rattling off two quick shots in the first five minutes from Kailey Nishimura and Angelique Carrillo.
Desarae Felix gave CBU its first look at the goal in the 11th minute, but FPU's goalkeeper made the save to keep it 0-0.
The Sunbirds struck first, however, in the 23rd minute, heading into halftime.
"We made some adjustments at halftime and did a tremendous job applying them," said St. Clair.
Less than seven minutes into the second frame, CBU would finally break through. Justene Kesterson drew a foul in the 18-yard box, putting Chaylin Couzens at the penalty spot. The junior converted the penalty kick with ease, tying the game 1-1 in the 52nd minute.
The Lancers kept pressing, and found the back of the net, thinking they had the game-winning goal, but it was called back. CBU couldn't break through again, however, to go to overtime for the second-straight game.
CBU thought it got a break as FPU had to play a woman down less than five minutes into the first-overtime period after two Sunbirds picked up red cards (one of the Sunbirds hadn't checked into the game yet). Felix, Couzens and Lauren Wallberg both got shots off in extra time, but the score remained 1-1 after 110 minutes.
Sara Escobedo made 12 saves on the night to keep her team in the contest.
"Sara was phenomenal once again," said St. Clair.
The Lancers return home for one last home stand, hosting Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. CBU concludes the regular season on the road in the Bay Area the following week.
