RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In its final two home games of the season, California Baptist University looked to go out with a bang. The Lancers dominated the action Thursday afternoon, not allowing Chaminade many chances on offense, let alone much time to possess the ball, beating the Silverswords 4-0.
CBU improves to 6-7-2, 6-3-1 in the PacWest, while Chaminade falls to 1-13-0, 0-10-0 in conference.
The Lancers poured on the pressure early, forcing the Silversword goalkeeper to stay busy.
Haley Wheelon struck first for CBU, scoring in the 26th minute of action. Kyler Clark sent in a ball into the box, finding Miranda Martinez. The freshman popped up the cross on her first touch, allowing Wheelon to head it home and give the Lancers an early 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, Chaylin Couzens got a good look at making it a 2-0 game, rocketing off a shot to the far post, but once again Chaminade's Lauren Ishii came up with a crucial save to keep her team in the game.
Coming out of halftime not feeling content with just a one-goal lead, the Lancers doubled their cushion in the 60th minute. Kailey Nishimura and Sydney Rockett picked up the double assist as they teamed up to feed Deasare Felix a cross. The freshman midfielder headed it into the back of the net to put CBU up 2-0.
Martinez picked up her second assist on the day in the 71st minute, feeding Lanai Navarro in behind the Silversword defense to put her one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Despite some tugging from the defender she just beat, Navarro kept her composure and slotted the ball into the goal to make it 3-0.
CBU wasn't done, however, as two more freshmen got into the action with just two minutes left on the clock. After grabbing her first collegiate goal earlier, Navarro worked hard to get her second assist of the season. She beat two defenders on the right side to send in a lofted ball into the 18-yard box, where Nadia Hernandez powered home a header to give the Lancers their largest lead of the season, 4-0.
CBU ends its home season on Saturday as it hosts Hawaii Pacific at 12:30 p.m. Two seniors — Courtney Shutts and Lauren Wallberg — will be honored before the two teams kick off.
