ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Coming into the week with a scoring average just over par, Marvi Monsalve looked to bounce back with a big day at the Flagler Fall Slam Tuesday morning. The junior did just that and guided the Lancers to a seventh-place finish in the prestigious tournament.
Monsalve shot a six-over 78 on Monday, but was quick to rectify the first round by shooting a two under par 70 on Tuesday to give her an 11th-place finish with a 148. While one Lancer came on hot in the final round, Natalie Park maintained her consistency from her first 18 holes and maintained a top-10 finish with a 146 after shooting one-over 73 in each outing.
Both performances were instrumental in CBU maintaining its seventh-place standing in a tournament packed with top-25 ranked teams in NCAA Division II. The No. 16 Lancers accumulated a 601 after trimming seven strokes off their first-round score with a 297 on Tuesday. The performance gave CBU higher finishes than No. 12 Flagler and No. 25 Armstrong State in its final tournament before its winter hiatus.
"We played a tremendous schedule this fall and our ladies rose to the challenge," Coach John Hackney said. "We finished first, third, fourth and then seventh in a class field this week, so I think we are poised and ready to make a push to the NCAA tournament in the spring."
Monsalve's second round was amongst the top performances of the day, tying individual winner Guro Rambjoer (Florida Tech) and was one stroke behind Maria Paola Fiorio (Barry) and Brittany LaPadula (Florida Tech), who each shot 69.
"Marvi had a really solid ball-striking day, her 70 really helped our team score," Hackney said. "It has been great to see the 2014 PacWest Player of the Year returning to her old form and being atop the leaderboards all fall."
Laura Scrivner also beat her first round score of a 79 shooting a 75 in the second round for a 154 total. Erica Wang ended up with a 156, with a 79 in the second round, to take 44th. Tayler Hoag ended the tournament with a 162 total.
Second-ranked Barry University won the Fall Slam by shooting two-under 574 collectively. Florida Tech, the No. 3 team, shot 575 to finish runner-up. Fourth-ranked Saint Leo (591, third); No. 13 Montevallo (596, fourth); Seminole State (597, fifth) and No. 7 Lynn (598, sixth) were all in striking distance of CBU.
With a four-month break, the Lancers are in action next at Point Loma's Super San Diego Championship on Feb. 8th.
