SAN DIEGO — It wasn't luck that lifted California Baptist University 1-0 over Point Loma Saturday afternoon, but a freshman's first collegiate goal and a strong defensive performance. Desarae Felix found the back of the net in the 27th minute from distance to give the Lancers their second-straight victory.
CBU improves to 3-5-1 overall, 3-1 in PacWest. Point Loma falls to 5-3 on the year, 2-1 in conference.
"The team played great today," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We battled well despite their pressure in the second half. Point Loma is a quality team and it's not easy to win on the road. It shows our growth and maturity."
While both teams got into their attacking thirds early, neither could get a shot on goal right away. Sara Escobedo made a routine save as the Sea Lions got their first shot on goal in the 25th minute.
Just two minutes later, Felix struck gold. After collecting the ball at the top of the box, Felix tucked away her shot into the far right post, keeping it hidden through traffic so the Sea Lion goalkeeper didn't see it coming.
"It was a quality shot, beautiful sequence on the goal," said St. Clair. "We attacked with purpose today and really executed well."
Holding onto the 1-0 lead at halftime, CBU knew it was a dangerous spot to be in and wanted to find some insurance, but it was the Sea Lions to press first. Escobedo had to make crucial saves to keep her net unscathed.
"Sara had a great game," said St. Clair. "Our back four were fantastic. It was a great collective defensive effort to get the clean sheet."
The Sea Lions kept pushing for the equalizer, but Escobedo and her backline held firm to the 1-0 lead.
"I really wanted that shutout today and I was determined to get it," said Escobedo, who finished with five saves on the day. "I thought we played our best game of the season and I'm really proud of our progress."
CBU returns home to host a pair of Hawaii schools, taking on Hawaii-Hilo on Thursday and BYU-Hawaii on Saturday, both kicking off at 12:30 p.m.
