RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Saturday afternoon, California Baptist University had two adversaries to compete against: BYU-Hawaii and the heat. It took a while, but the Lancers broke through late in the game and held on for a 1-0 victory.

CBU improves to .500 on the year with a 5-5-1 overall record, staying tied for first in the PacWest at 5-1. The Seasiders drop to 2-6-2, 1-3-1 in conference.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half to go into halftime with a 0-0 draw.

Angelique Carrillo gave the Lancers their best shot of the half in the ninth minute of the game. Chaylin Couzens took the ball to the corner and sent in a gorgeous cross to the far post, but Carrillo's one-touch was just wide of the open net.

Coming out of the break, the Lancers wanted to get on the board first and got another dangerous opportunity in the 68th minute. Carrillo was on the prowl at the far post but just couldn't connect to keep it 0-0.

CBU finally broke through the barrier in the 76th minute as Lanai Navarro sent a cross into the box, allowing Lauren Wallberg to tuck it away.

BYUH tried to push at the end, but didn't have enough steam, allowing the Lancers to grab their third-straight shutout victory.

CBU heads out on the road to take on rival Azusa Pacific — which is receiving votes in the NCAA Division II — on Thursday for a 5:00 p.m. kick off.
