ANAHEIM, Calif. — No. 11-ranked California Baptist University made it two-for-two as it grabbed its second-straight win Saturday afternoon. The Lancers opened with the first points of the game and never looked back en route to a 79-68 victory over Alaska-Anchorage.
CBU improves to 2-0 on the young season, while the Seawolves drop to 1-1.
Just like they had the night before, Jordan Giusti, Michael Smith and Gelaun Wheelwright each scored in double figures, with Jordan Heading jumping in on the action as well.
Giusti had a great game, grabbing 16 points (6-for-8, 4-for-5 three-pointers), snagging six rebounds and dishing out four assists without turning the ball over.
Wheelwright extends his streak of scoring in double-digits to eight games, carrying over six from last season, as he finished with 18 points (5-for-12, 4-for-8 from three-point range). Smith followed closely behind with 17 points (7-for-13) and also added six rebounds. Heading rounded out the quartet with 15 points (5-for-9).
CBU opened on a 6-0 run before UAA could catch its footing. Smith initiated the run by driving to the basket and Giusti capped the run with a layup of his own.
The Seawolves broke the run, but struggled to keep the Lancers close. After UAA cut the score to one, 10-9, CBU went on another run to take its first double-digit lead of the game at 27-11. Wheelwright drained three triples during that span.
Alaska-Anchorage cut the deficit back into single digits with four minutes before halftime, but the Lancers quickly built it back up to walk into the break with a 38-28 cushion.
After the Seawolves hit a three to make it 43-33 early in the second half, CBU responded by drilling four shots from the beyond the arc to take its largest lead of the night, 54-33. Giusti got the 13-0 run going with a shot from the corner, followed by another triple from Michael Robinson. Smith got in on the action, but from inside two-point territory, before Wheelwright found nothing but net to force a UAA timeout.
CBU looked like it could just coast through the remaining 16:06 minutes, but that was still a lot of time on the clock. The Seawolves kept chipping away, hoping to bring down the margin and brought it down to 10 points with a minute left. As UAA tried to foul back in, Wheelwright hit his free shots to lock down the 79-68 victory.
The Lancers continue their opening weekend Sunday evening, tipping off at 8:30 p.m. to conclude the CCA Tipoff Classic. CBU faces Upper Iowa at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
