RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Youth has been a big component both on the pro and con side of California Baptist University's season so far, but Thursday afternoon it was a definite pro. Two freshmen scored to help lift the Lancers 2-0 over Hawaii-Hilo.
The win moves CBU to 4-5-1 overall, 4-1-0 in PacWest action, and extends its win streak to three-straight games. The Vulcans — who played 110 minutes of action the night before — fall to 3-2-3 on the year, 2-2-0 in conference.
"I thought we were a little slow out of the gate but the players did a good job to roll up their sleeves and go to work," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We were able to play through the ebbs and flows of the game. Two freshman stepped up for us today with two key goals."
CBU wasted little time to start pressing the Vulcans, hoping to take advantage of their tiredness and fired off three shots within the first 10 minutes. Justene Kesterson put her attempt on frame, but UHH goalkeeper Tiani Teanio made the save. Less than a minute later, Haley Wheelon's shot hit the crossbar.
The Lancers kept pressing and Kyler Clark looked like she might get her first collegiate goal in the 37th minute, sending a knuckle ball on target, but Teanio once again made the save.
Four minutes later in the 41st minute, CBU broke through the scoreless drought. Kailey Nishimura sent a low pass into the 18-yard box, finding Miranda Martinez at the top of the six-yard box. The freshman made a quick turn, avoiding her defender, and slotted it far post to put her team up 1-0 just before halftime.
In the second half, it was the Vulcans to attack first, hoping to catch the Lancers sleeping. Sara Escobedo had to make one of just two saves four minutes into the second frame to keep the score at 1-0.
Determined to get an insurance goal, CBU kept attacking. Nishimura, who got the assist on the first goal, showed off some fancy footwork to get her own look at the net, but Teanio kept it out of harm's way.
In almost a déjà vu fashion of the first goal, another freshman struck with four minutes left on the clock. Desarae Felix received a pass from Angelique Carrillo and dribbled passed a defender to tuck it away for her second collegiate goal.
The Lancers closed out the remaining minutes to walk away with the 2-0 victory. CBU will look to keep building momentum as it turns around to host BYU-Hawaii on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
"We want to continue to get sharper every day," said St. Clair. "I thought we did a good job focusing on our execution today. This is a good win for us. We'll go back to work tomorrow and start getting ready for BYUH."
