RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Coming off two tough losses, there was plenty of frustration California Baptist University wanted to exercise in its second game of the Lancer Invite Friday night.
CBU did just that with its most dominant victory on the year over seventh-ranked Cal Lutheran in NCAA Division III, 19-6, at the Lancer Aquatics Center. The Lancers opened the day with a loss to Citrus College, 15-13, and were coming off a 13-11 loss to 15th-ranked UC San Diego Thursday night. CBU improve to 10-8 on the season in the day's split.
Tucker Angelo finished with a team-high six goals on the day for CBU, with a hat trick in each game. Nick Candau scored five goals for the Lancers, with a hat trick against the Kingsmen. David Ring, Teddy Forte and Clint Walling each had three goals.
The Lancers came out with a vengeance against Cal Lutheran, scoring the first eight goals of the game and seven of them in the first quarter. Angelo provided two goals in the first quarter, while Thomas Henline, Ryan Sargis, Forte, Ring and Luke Schuler added to the run. Walling scored almost immediately in the second quarter to increase the lead to 8-0 before CLU got on the board about 10 minutes into the game.
It may have been one of the closest-contested quarter of the game, but the Lancers still won it, 6-4, to up their cushion to 13-4 at the half. Walling and Candau each had a pair of goals in the eight-minute frame. The lead only grew to 17-5 when CBU won the third, 4-1.
In the opener, the Lancers launched a furious rally in an attempt to overcome an early deficit against an unconventional squad in Citrus. The Owls won the first quarter, 5-2, and expanded their lead to 9-4 at the half. CBU cut within four, 12-8, with a 4-3 triumph in the third, thanks to two goals from Forte.
Down big going into the fourth, the Lancers never gave up and pulled within a goal, 14-13, with 3:07 to play when they scored three straight. Teraoka started the charge with a goal at the 4:25 mark, bringing his team within 14-11. Candau kept it going and scored twice within 48 seconds to keep comeback hopes alive. Citrus escaped with the win when it scored the final goal with 1:53 to play.
Saturday will conclude the Lancer Invite, with games being played from 9 a.m. to 6:20 p.m. CBU opens and closes the tournament respectively against 19th-ranked Whittier and La Verne -- the No. 9 team in Division III.
