RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In just her second taste of competition this season, Lauren Skinner stamped her ticket to the NCAA Division II Championships. It qualifies California Baptist University's one-two junior punch of Skinner and Bre Schlenger for nationals for the third year in a row.
After missing nearly the first two months of the season with an injury, Skinner went up against divers from Division-I Bakersfield and UC San Diego at the Inland Empire Invitational hosted at the Lancer Aquatics Center Saturday, with UC San Diego and Bakersfield also in attendance.
"I feel a lot more confident after this meet, knowing I can qualify after just a couple weeks of training," Skinner said. "I am feeling healthy now and just good overall.
"I knew I could qualify today, it was just a matter of hitting dives. I was really focusing on my hurdles, keeping my chest up and staying warm because it was freezing."
Skinner started her day with a runner-up finish on the one-meter board, with 261 points on a six-dive list. It was six points higher than the qualifying mark of 255 in Division II. She took third on the three-meter, with 238.95 points.
The Lancers have now qualified six of their eight divers for the NCAA Division II Championships, across both the men and women teams. It is the most divers the program has ever sent on to nationals in a season.
"I couldn't be more thrilled with the women," Coach Jeff Couto said. "Skinner is back to nationals with that cut. For her to come back and take second on the one-meter, I could not be more encouraged by how far she's progressed in such a short time."
The Long Beach native started strong on the one-meter board and in the day overall, with 44.85 and 44.40 points on her first two dives.
"I hit my first dive of the meet and from there I knew I could qualify," Skinner said. "It was a confidence booster."
Skinner finished even better, tallying 50.40 points – the second-best dive of the event – the fifth time around and ending with 47.30 on her final.
"I really feel relieved to have already qualified," Skinner said. "Now I can focus on getting bigger dives for nationals, I can start increasing my difficulty now."
On the three-meter board, Janae Jizmejian took ninth place with 164.30 points. On her 11-dive voluntary list, the freshman compiled 283.70 points. Jizmejian also took 10th on the one-meter event (159.15).
"It is the first Janae has done an 11-dive list on three-meter," Couto said. "She is making huge strides on technique and fundamentals. As we get that, she has potential to be one of the best divers we have ever had in this program. There is great potential in her in the years to come."
Kristen Farrell finished 11th on the one-meter (153.15) and three-meter (124.80) boards. She accumulated 258.10 points on her 11-dive list on the three-meter board.
