RIVERSIDE, Calif. – While California Baptist University may not have rested in preparation for its non-conference dual with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the Lancers certainly looked fresh in a dominant 161-77 victory over the Athenas Friday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
"We had a really intensive training session this morning, we didn't hold back at all," Coach Rick Rowland said. "We are training through, we have two more weeks of meets and then we are backing off for conference."
Next up, CBU hosts Fresno Pacific, Concordia and Azusa Pacific Saturday at noon. UC San Diego visits Riverside on Jan. 16th at noon, just four days before the Lancers head back to Grand Junction, Colo., for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships hosted at Colorado Mesa.
Alena Rumiantceva, Yosita Hapsari and Lauren Skinner were both multi-time winners on Friday, as the Lancers won 10 of the 13 events. Depth was also a key factor to CBU's success, as it swept the top-three spots in four events.
Rumiantceva swam on the victorious 500-yard medley relay team of Andrea Laliena, Kristina Tchernyschev and Hailey Golden to open the day in five minutes, 20.10 seconds. She would also win the 300 individual medley (3:25.45) and 300 breaststroke (3:48.47).
Hapsari won the 200 (1:55.12) and 500 freestyles (5:16.17). Skinner swept both boards, winnings the one-meter with 444.22 points and the three-meter with 417.45.
Courtney Chacon and Robin Smallwood gave the Lancers winners in the 300 butterfly (3:23.50) and 100 free (54.40), respectively.
In the 1,000 free, CBU took all the medal positions – led by Christie Halverson in first (10:40.55), followed by Tessa Olson (10:50.67) and Courtney Chacon (10:52.25).
After the Lancers won the three-meter, Bre Schlenger (407.03), Janae Jizmejian (280.27) and Kristen Farrell (279.30) took second to fourth. Jizmejian went runner-up on the one (429.82) and Farrell took fourth in the event with a career best 299.47.
It was the first time CBU Dive Coach Jeff Couto has had both his reigning NCAA Division II All-Americans, Skinner and Schlenger, together at once.
"It is unreal having them back," Couto said. "They are the dynamic duo, they are both juniors and have been together since their freshmen year. It is great having them in there, battling each other and both scoring 50-point dives."
Four different Lancers placed behind Rumiantceva to give their team a one-through-three finish in the 300 IM and 300 breaststroke. Kylie Mihld (3:29.73) and Laliena (3:32.27) went two, three in the IM; Melody Coleman (3:53.22) and Alyson Barnes (3:54.79) did so in the breast.
Olson had another runner-up finish in the 500 free (5:16.90), as did Tchernyschev in the 300 back (3:29.01). Sara Yoshii had two third-place swims in the 200 free (2:00.52) and 300 fly (3:30.99). Ashley Johnson also took third in the 50 (25.14) and 100 free (55.11).
