CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. -- In a field filled with eight NCAA Division I teams, California Baptist University showed it was not too far off its upper-division foes. The Lancers placed seventh at the Folino Invitational and bested three D-I squads -- Cal State Bakersfield, host Cal State Fullerton and St. Bonaventure -- in the process.
The Lancers finished with a three-round total of 909 after shooting a 307 in Tuesday's third round and 304 in the second, which was completed Tuesday as well. It was a 22-stroke improvement on CBU's 933 third-round total from last season. All four CBU players who scored in Tuesday's second and third round broke 80 at a very challenging Industry Hills Golf Club.
Midseason Fresno State transfer Christian Sanders shot a team-best, two-over-par 74 in the second round and followed it up with a 75 in the third to finish with a 223 (74-74-75). Kavan Eubank was not far off, shooting a 76 in the second round and 75 in the third to put up a six-over 222 (71-76-75) to finish tied for ninth place overall after shooting a one-under 71 in the first round. Sanders took 13th place on the individual leaderboard.
"Both of those guys played really well, I was really proud of them," Coach John Hackney said. "They putted really well on some triple-tiered greens. Christian had a ton of good par saves. Kavan hit a lot of greens and managed to keep things at one or two putts.
Sanders has already had a positive impact on the team, Hackney said. The Lancers offer their coach a ton of depth now with the sophomore's unconventional but successful stroke.
"Christian keeps a good demeanor out there, he's very focused and very competitive," Hackney said. "You want those kind of competitors. He hits the ball straight and uses an unorthodox swing called the zero shift, very few people use it but he's been fine tuning it for a few years. He hits the ball really well and he has a good putter. He's really added to our depth."
Tai Kuida carded a 236 (79-79-78) overall and took 42nd after shooting a 79 in the second round and 78 in the third. Freshman Greg Gonzalez rebounded from an 84 in the second round with a 79 in the finale to end the tournament in 44th with a 237 (74-84-79). Neil Hand shot 75 in the second and 83 in the third to combine for a 239 (81-79-83) and place 47th.
Next week, CBU will compete in the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic at the Arrowhead Country Club.
