Lancers Top Utah to Cap Off a Perfect Mary Nutter Experience

CATHEDRAL CITY, CA --- The Lancers waited until 8:35 p.m. to hit the field for the final time at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, as a meeting with the Utah Utes awaited CBU on Saturday. Led by an outstanding relief performance by Emily Darwin, and some friendly bounces, CBU found the win column yet again to cap off a perfect 5-0 showing in the desert.
CBU are now winners of ten in a row as their record improves to 13-3 on the season.
Emily Darwin stole the show in her final appearance in Cathedral City. Called on to start the third inning after two frames from Miranda De Nava, Darwin stymied the Utes over five innings of work.
Darwin allowed just two hits and fanned six Utah batters, including an inning ending punch out in the sixth with the tying run in scoring position. Darwin is now 5-1 in her first season with the Lancers.
Utah were the first ones on the board with two runs in the second, but then CBU answered in the bottom half with a three spot. A wild pitch plated the first run and then Stevie Robison delivered with two outs on a blooper down the left field line, plating Malachy Russell-Millen and Jordyn Madrigal to give CBU the lead.
The Lancers added more in the fourth when a ball hit by Matti Severns bounced off the glove of the first baseman, allowing two more runs to cross home.
Utah struck for two in the sixth, but the rally would not be extended as the Lancers hung on for the 5-4 win.
CBU now returns to Riverside as winners of ten in a row, a streak that began over a week ago at the CBU Classic. The Lancers earned victories over Oregon State, UC San Diego, Seattle, Fresno State, and Utah in Cathedral City this weekend to extend the streak and cap off the road trip.
Next up for the Lancers is a midweek matchup with San Diego on Tuesday at John C. Funk Stadium. CBU will then return to the road for their third tournament of the season, the ASU/GCU Invitational in Arizona.
Tuesday's meeting with the Toreros is scheduled for 6 p.m.
