RIVERSIDE --- Right-hander Emily Darwin has been named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Pitcher of the Week for the first time with CBU. Darwin made four appearances over the weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic and played a key role in CBU's 5-0 showing in Palm Springs.
The Lancers picked up six wins last week, five coming in the Mary Nutter Classic. CBU has now won ten in a row and enters the week 13-3. CBU was slotted at No. 25 in D1Softball's latest Mid-Major Poll that was released on Monday morning.
Darwin wrapped up last week 3-0 in the circle with a 2.68 ERA. She also earned her first save of the season after recording the final two outs of a 9-8 victory over Seattle. Darwin started the game against the Redhawks but was pulled less than two innings in. She made her return to the game in the seventh inning and silenced the Seattle comeback.
The Seattle win was highlighted by seventh-inning home runs from Makayla Medellin and Malachy Russell-Millen, giving CBU three runs after a five-run outburst from the Redhawks to take the lead in the sixth.
Darwin began her week with a winning performance against Oregon State. The righty logged 3.2 shutout innings in relief, in which she allowed only two hits and struck out three. Her second victory came after five innings of work against Fresno State, in which she allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
The best showing was saved for last, as Darwin silenced Utah late Saturday night to earn her third win of the week and send CBU home unbeaten. Darwin struck out six over five innings of relief work. Her biggest punchout came in the top of the sixth, with CBU leading by one, as she fanned a Utah batter to end the inning and strand the tying run on third base.
Through eight appearances this season, Darwin is 5-1 with a 2.18 ERA.
Monday's honor is Darwin's second WAC Pitcher of the Week nod. She earned the award in 2024 with Grand Canyon.
The Lancers have another busy week ahead, starting tomorrow with a midweek meeting against San Diego. The Toreros will visit John C. Funk Stadium for a 6 p.m. first pitch, then it's off to Arizona for four games at the ASU/GCU Invitational.
CBU will open the weekend on Friday at Grand Canyon's GCU Softball Stadium in Phoenix. The Lancers will play CSU Bakersfield and Wisconsin. CBU then shifts to Tempe on Saturday for two games at Arizona State's Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium. The Lancers will play CSUB again before squaring off with Arizona State to end the trip.
