ST. LOUIS, Mo. – After making a big splash at its first NCAA Division II Championships, California Baptist University has two wrestlers looking to raise the program's profile even more in its second run.
CBU placed 12th in Division II a season ago, with five national qualifiers and three All-American finishers. All five of last year's qualifiers did not represent the Lancers at regionals this season, due to a wide range of issues from graduation to injuries.
So this time, CBU is being represented by two newcomers in Super Region IV 184-pound champion Jacob Waste and the region's fourth-place 157 finisher Nolan Kistler at the national tournament held in the Chaifetz Arena Friday and Saturday. Trackwrestling is offering live coverage of the action here.
Like the rest of the qualifiers, both Waste and Kistler have national championship hopes. Three Lancers (Jacob Mitchell, Bradford Gerl and Bryden Lazaro) became the program's first NCAA All-Americans in 2014, with both CBU representatives looking to add themselves to that list with a top-eight finish in their bracket.
Kistler, a freshman, takes a 24-13 record into the tournament, and will make his national debut with undefeated Clint Poster of St. Cloud State (36-0). Like he did at the Super Region Championships, Kistler will need to upset the higher-ranked opponent, as Poster ended the regular season as the top-ranked 157-pounder in Division II, to keep his championship dreams alive.
A win would move Kistler into the quarterfinals against the winner of fourth-ranked Francsis Mizia of Mercyhurst (28-4) and Tiffin's Samphanh Viengmany (22-17).
With a 26-2 record, a 23-match winning streak and undefeated record against Division II opponents, Waste ended the regular season as the fifth-ranked wrestler in Division II. Nevertheless, the sophomore Division-I transfer from Buffalo is looking to outperform his ranking.
He draws Lindenwood's John McArdle (14-7) in the first round, an opponent he defeated with an 8-2 decision back in dual action in January. A match with the winner of Ashland's Kurt Schaefer (27-10) and Mercyhurst's Dakota DesLauriers' (23-10) bout looms in the quarterfinals.
Ouachita Baptist's Dallas Smith (25-1), San Francisco State's Johnathon Costa (20-16), Kutztown's Andre Petroski (22-8) and Shorter's Terrence Smith (21-6) also reside on Waste's side of the bracket. Smith ended the regular season as the top-ranked 184, and if Waste wins the first two rounds he would likely run into him in the semifinals.
