OAKLAND, Calif. – California Baptist University got its first win of the PacWest season behind big performances from Andy Crowley and Tyson Miller in the first half of its doubleheader with Academy of Art.
Backed by Miller's complete game and a 3-for-4, three run batted in performance from Andy Crowley, CBU opened the day with a 7-2 victory at Laney College. The Urban Knights would answer back in the nightcap with a 3-1 win to split the day.
Miller was phenomenal Friday, striking out 11 and allowing just four base runners on three hits and a walk, with only one of ArtU's runs being earned.
Offensively, Crowley and Luke Navigato anchored the Lancers. Both went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Crowley started the scoring with a leadoff solo home run in the third.
A Zack Norris single and walk to Stephen Lohr built on the momentum Crowley started, and helped set up a sacrifice fly from Nathan Antoun, Just as quickly, Academy of Art tied the game with two runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Navigato mounted a rally with a leadoff sixth-inning single. A passed ball moved the freshman to second and a throwing error committed on a sacrifice bunt from pinch-hitter Steven Pena scored him. Pena would come home and give the Lancers a 4-2 edge on a sac fly into left from Crowley.
An error committed on a play forced by Navigato gave CBU another lead runner in the eighth. Crowley cashed in the second baseman with a single through the right side. Norris was walked in the next at-bat and a double steal gave Lohr a shot at two RBIs. Lohr cashed in them both with a single through the right side to cap the scoring as CBU closed out the 7-2 win.
In the nightcap, CBU scored in the top of the first. Norris started it off with a one-out single and proceeded to steal second. The bases were quickly loaded on a four-pitch walk to Antonio Chavarria and single from Lohr. The pressure broke the Knights, as a wild pitch pushed Norris across, but the Lancers couldn't cash in more.
Academy of Art settled down and tied the game in the second. Two more runs in the sixth helped deliver the 3-1 victory for the Urban Knights.
