RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- With its longest homestand of the season starting up, California Baptist University continues a challenging PacWest slate starting with Hawaii Pacific.
Five PacWest teams make up half of the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association top-10 rankings in NCAA Division II, which leaves the Lancers with plenty of time and opportunity to work their way back into the playoff picture. The Sharks check in at No. 8 this week, as CBU begins 12 games straight at James W. Totman Stadium. The four-game series will be played out Saturday and Monday, with two nine inning games scheduled for the first day and a nine-and-seven set up for Monday.
In its conference home opener, CBU is looking to build on its series split with Academy of Art. Hawaii Pacific opened PacWest play as the hottest team in the league with a sweep of Fresno Pacific and Holy Names. It lost that distinction when it dropped three of four to Dixie State last weekend.
The Lancers continue to be led by the likes of regular contributors A.J. David (.356), Stephen Lohr (.322), Antonio Chavarria (.322), Zack Norris (.316) and Luke Navigato (.313) on offense, and Jeremy McDonald (2.51), Tyson Miller (3.51) and Adam Hofacket (3.51) in the starting rotation. Several reserves are making strong contributions and bids for more playing time. Tyler Johnson and Johnathan Davis had impressive performances in the series finale with the Urban Knights at the plate and on the mound, respectively, Saturday. In his first career start, Johnson went 3-for-5 with five runs batted in, two runs and a double. Davis only allowed one hit and struck out three through five innings in his first start of the season.
SERIES NOTES
This is one of California Baptist University's tightest-contested series in the PacWest, with the Lancers holding a 14-12 edge. All four games were split in Hawaii last year. CBU holds the longest winning streak in the history of the series, which began in 1990, at four games after claiming the last two games of its first four-game series in 2012 and first two of the next series that same year. No team has ever swept a multi-game series in this matchup, with the Lancers becoming the first side to win three games in a four-game set at home in 2013.
A LOOK AT THE SHARKS
Hawaii Pacific was the hottest team in the PacWest the first two weeks of the conference, but it lost that distinction when it ran into Dixie State -- the only other undefeated team in the PacWest -- and lost three of four. It is a balanced Sharks team that hits .280 as a whole and sports a 3.81 ERA as a staff. Derek Nakasato is the focal point in the middle of HPU's lineup, as he brings a .429 batting average (21-for-49), a .673 slugging percentage, 18 RBI, 13 runs, four triples and four doubles into this series. Steven Camberos (.391), Jordan Oshiro (.362) and Nolan Barraza (.328, 19 RBI) all hit over .300 for the Sharks. Harley Holt is HPU's ace with a 3-1 record, 1.09 ERA, .186 opposing batting average, two complete games and a shutout in four starts. Rico Garcia is the best strikeout pitcher for Hawaii Pacific, as he has 31 punch outs and a 2.13 ERA through 25.1 innings. Brandon Van Stone (4.55 ERA) and Nick Camarena (4.88) round out the rotation.

RECORD WATCH
Quite a bit of history was made by CBU in 2014 -- a program-best winning streak (24 games) after the team won its first 15 games of the year and last nine of 2013. Gary Adcock also won his 400th win with the program and Trevor Oaks became the new career leader in ERA (1.68) when he was drafted in the seventh round by the Los Angeles Dodgers after one season at CBU. More history is set to be made in 2015, with Andy Crowley and David Herd in position to do so at the plate and on the mound, respectively. Crowley is 175 at-bats, 50 hits, 50 runs and five triples shy of being the all-time record holder in those categories. Herd is seven wins, five complete games and less than 93 innings pitched away from history.
LAST YEAR
CBU relied on a dominant pitching staff that posted a 3.14 ERA and small-ball approach, with a lineup that hit .309 with just 22 home runs (tied for second least in program history) to help it go 39-15, 20-12 in the PacWest last year. It was a far cry from the Lancers' power surge in 2013 when it hit 65 homers, but just as effective. CBU went on to qualify for the NCAA Division II postseason in its first shot and reached the West Region semifinals after entering as the third seed. The Lancers had a flair for the dramatic a year ago, with three walk-off victories from three different players -- Zack Norris, Nathan Antoun and Andy Crowley, who all return this year.
ADCOCK AT A GLANCE
CBU has been a perennial power under coach Gary Adcock, who is in his 12th season coaching the team. He owns a winning percentage of .656 (416-217-1) and has the most wins in program history by 298 games. Ten of his 11 teams have qualified for the postseason, the lone exception being in 2009, with four reaching the national bracket and three winning national titles, including the NAIA World Series title in 2010 and NCCAA Championships in 2012 and 2013. The Lancers reached the NCAA Division II West Region semifinals last year. His teams have won five conference championships, including a four-year run from 2010 to 2013. Nineteen of his players have been All-American, 19 were named national scholar-athletes, 14 were selected in the MLB Draft and 12 of his athletes have been conference Player (six) or Pitcher of the Year (six), with 56 athletes earning all-conference selection.
