REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – After splitting a doubleheader the day before, California Baptist University did not want to leave anything to chance in its PacWest series finale with Academy of Art.
CBU took an immediate four-run lead and used its early cushion to defeat the Urban Knights, 14-0, to split the series. Johnathan Davis gave the Lancers a standout start – his first of the season – and three-hit games from Antonio Chavarria and Tyler Johnson helped CBU take over early. The Lancers improve to 10-12, 2-2 in the conference and ArtU falls to 5-15, 3-5 on the season.
Davis arguably had the best performance of his CBU career. The junior allowed just one base runner on a hit and struck out three batters on just 47 pitches through five innings.
With a big lead in hand, the Lancers went to their bullpen early with five pitchers contributing to the shutout. Stephen Carajabal threw a scoreless sixth inning, allowing just one walk and striking out two. David Herd allowed one hit but was otherwise spotless in one inning of relief. Patrick Gonzales did not allow a runner and struck out two in the eighth and Andy Crowley kept the shutout in tact despite a hit and walk in the bottom of the ninth.
In his first start, Johnson went 3-for-5 with five runs batted in and two scored. Chavarria also went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. A.J. David and Luke Navigato batted .500 (2-for-4) with two runs and an RBI each.
CBU exploded for four runs in the top of the first, behind run-scoring hits from Chavarria, David and Johnson. Zack Norris started the rally with a one-out walk and Chavarria quickly plated him with a 2-2 double down the right-field line.
A pair of two-out hits helped CBU build on its lead. First, David pushed Chavarria across with a single through the right side. In his first start of the season, Johnson lined a single into center field to score Taylor Wetzel and David, giving the Lancers a 4-0 cushion to start the game.
Stephen Lohr scored Norris, who started the second with a walk, with a double into the left-center gap in the next inning.
In the third, Navigato got things going with a double to left. Johnson traded places with the freshman when he doubled into right and gave CBU a 6-0 lead. Crowley scored Johnson, who was sacrificed over to third, with a grounder to second.
CBU kept coming and pushed two more across in the fourth. Lohr was walked to start the frame and moved to third on a David single. Johnson came up with another clutch two-out hit that gave both runners the chance to touch home safely.
In the sixth inning, Academy of Art managed to grab two quick outs. Navigato kept the inning going with a single and then stole second, before coming home on an RBI single from Gallaway. A throwing error would score Johnson to give CBU an 11-0 lead through six.
A leadoff Chavarria single and hit by pitch to Lohr caused more danger for the Knights in the seventh. Nathan Antoun scored both runners and gave CBU a 13-0 cushion with a single up the middle after Bryce Macy moved both runners into scoring position with a grounder to first. Two errors led to DJ Porter scoring the final run of the game in the top of the ninth as the Lancers took the 14-0 win.
The Lancers continue a challenging PacWest schedule and begin a 12-game home stand -- their longest of the season -- next week. Hawaii Pacific, which entered Saturday undefeated in conference (11-2, 8-0) comes to Totman Stadium first for doubleheaders next Saturday and Monday.
